Seeing the dividends

Most lawns around town are either yellow, or else the grass is completely gone. Our dreary yards are a testament to the severe drought this area has suffered over the last several years.

The city has been in Stage IV water restrictions for more than two years, meaning that use of potable water to irrigate lawns and outdoor plants is prohibited. Those restrictions have paid off. According to the city, we currently use 1.4 million gallons of water a day, about a million gallons less than we were using in 2011.

State facing medical access difficulties

SANTA FE  — New Mexicans could have longer waits for a doctor or specialist as demand grows for medical services because of an aging population and expanded insurance coverage under a federal health care law, legislative auditors said Wednesday.

A report released by the Legislative Finance Committee said state residents could encounter growing problems of access to medical care due to the potential need of 2,000 physicians, 3,000 registered nurses and as many as 800 dentists.

Woman set
on fire dies

ROSWELL — Police in Roswell are investigating the death of a woman who had been set on fire.
Authorities say 44-year-old Lisa Smith ran out of her apartment last Friday night engulfed in flames. She later died at a Texas hospital.
KOAT-TV reports that police want to question Smith’s 49-year-old husband in the case but don’t know where he is.
Police say Patrick Smith is 5 feet 9 inches tall, 200 pounds and has brown eyes and a shaved head.

New schedule for West

Graduation is just around the corner for West Las Vegas High School; however, principal John Bustos is already looking into a scheduling change for next school year.

Judge delays ruling in Chavez case

BERNALILLO — A judge in the case of a former Albuquerque police officer accused of killing his wife on Wednesday rescinded on oral ruling to seal all new pretrial motions and said he will rule next week on whether to unseal other documents sought by media outlets.
