Kiwanis Bike Safety Rodeo is Saturday
The 22 annual Kiwanis Bike Safety Rodeo will take place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. this Saturday at the NMHU Wilson Gym parking lot. Cost is $5 and includes a new helmet or $1 if attendee provides a helmet. Ages 5 to 12. For more information, call 425-3637.

Speaker to HU grads: Make a difference

Kim Carpenter, a Highlands University alumnus and co-author of the New York Times best selling book The Vow, urged the university’s graduates to go out and make the world a better place.

“There is an urgency to go out and make a difference...,” said Carpenter, the keynote speaker at the commencement ceremony at John A. Wilson Complex Saturday. “You are the future.”

New schedule for West

Graduation is just around the corner for West Las Vegas High School; however, principal John Bustos is already looking into a scheduling change for next school year.

Cowboys No. 3 seed in RMAC

The long-awaited “second season” begins Wednesday for the New Mexico Highlands baseball team (28-22 overall, 24-16 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference).

NMHU is the No. 3 seed in the RMAC tournament and plays No. 4 Regis. Whoever prevails advances to play either No. 2 Colorado State-Pueblo or No. 5 Metro State at 7 p.m. Thursday. The loser plays in a 3:30 p.m. Thursday game against whoever wins the first-rounder between No. 1 Colorado Mesa and No. 6 Colorado School of Mines.

An investiture ceremony for Gerald E. Baca will be held at 4:30 p.m. this Thursday in the Division 1 courtroom at the courthouse in Las Vegas. Baca was selected to fill the vacant judge position in the 4th Judicial District. Residents of Mora, San Miguel and Guadalupe counties are invited to attend.

Go Fish - May 10, 2013

FISHING REPORT, May 7
Charette Lakes: Fishing was good using Power Bait, worms and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports on perch.
Cimarron River: Water flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 28 cfs. Trout fishing was good using Panther Martins, elk hair caddis, Cimarron specials, Cimarron worms, salmon eggs and worms. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was fair using assorted spinners, salmon eggs and Power Bait.

Quintana signs with Cowgirls

The New Mexico Highlands women’s track and field program added another homegrown star to the fold on Wednesday, when West Las Vegas’ Jayme Quintana signed a letter of intent to continue her education and athletic career at NMHU.

“It’s very exciting,” said Quintana. “Coach (Bob) DeVries really pushed me, telling me how much potential I have. And my family has encouraged me a lot.”
