Seat belt ticket blitz under way
The state Department of Transportation is warning motorists to buckle up or risk getting a ticket.
Every year during the Memorial Day holiday period, May 20-June 2, law enforcement agencies join forces from coast to coast for an enforcement blitz that delivers on the message: Click It or Ticket.
DOT said in a news release that the mobilization is supported by national and local paid advertising and earned media campaigns aimed at raising awareness before the blitz.

Highlands to get new digs in Santa Fe

New Mexico Highlands University representatives joined Santa Fe Higher Education Center officials for the April 23 groundbreaking for the HEC’s new building.

Highlands University was the first public university in New Mexico to sign the higher education partnership agreement with the HEC in 2010. Highlands has operated a Santa Fe site since 1996 through a partnership with Santa Fe Community College.

Party preceded fatal crash

Witnesses testifying in a preliminary hearing against Wayne Lovato on Monday claimed that the youth was speeding when he leaned over and tried to kiss a girl riding in the front passenger seat of his car before the fatal wreck that left two teens dead and several others injured.

“We were on the highway, Wayne leaned over to kiss Kayla (Esquibel) and that’s when we flipped,” said Reyes Rubio, 21, testifying during a lengthy hearing before juvenile court Judge Abigail Aragon on Monday.

Highlands, State Land Office sign collaboration agreement

State Land Commissioner Ray Powell and New Mexico Highlands University signed an agreement last week to share critical information about the species of plants and animals on state trust land and to work cooperatively on large projects like forest thinning in northern New Mexico.

Oklahoma twister devastates suburb

MOORE, Okla.  — Emergency crews combed the sticks and rubble remains of an Oklahoma City suburb Tuesday morning less than a day after a massive tornado slammed through the community, flattening homes and demolishing an elementary school. At least 24 people were killed, including at least seven children, and those numbers were expected to climb.

As the sun rose over the shattered community of Moore, the state medical examiner’s office cut the estimated death toll by more than half.

Big threat to press freedom

Republicans, Democrats and defenders of the First Amendment are decrying the decision by the Justice Department to secretly subpoena two months of telephone records of reporters and editors for The Associated Press.

FBI agent charged with wife’s slaying

STAFFORD, Va. — An FBI agent in Stafford County is charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of his estranged wife.

The Free Lance-Star  reports that Arthur “Art” Gonzales told dispatchers he killed 42-year-old Julia Serna Gonzales in self-defense when he says she attacked him with a knife. Both Gonzales and his wife had ties to Las Vegas.

The 43-year-old defendant surrendered to authorities on Friday and is being held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bail.
