BREAKING: Fire set to cover up murder

UPDATED: Jose Montoya and Gary Esquibel, the two fugitives being sought in connection with the murder and arson that occurred on 12th Street early Saturday morning, were both captured in Albuquerque Sunday afternoon. Las Vegas Police Chief Christian Montaño said that LVPD investigative work led to the arrests.

The man whose body was discovered inside an apartment that burned early Saturday morning was shot in the head during a fight, and then the shooter and another man torched the apartment to cover up the crime.

Mora project in peril

The director of a state agency given oversight authority on the Mora County Complex says he is “alarmed” by the Mora County Commission’s decision to hire Roger Gonzales as interim county manager, given his history with public funds.

And Arthur W. Pepin says the Administrative Office of the Courts will continue its involvement with the project only if Gonzales isn’t involved in any way.

Man stabbed on Church St.

Las Vegas Optic

A man was airlifted to a trauma center late Friday or early Saturday morning after he was stabbed on Church Street.

Details on that incident were sketchy as of the Optic’s press time.

Las Vegas Police Chief Christian Montaño said a male was stabbed in the chest and was airlifted to a trauma center.

Montaño said the man was in critical condition.

“We have some possible suspects on that one,” he said.

Names of the victim and the suspects weren’t immediately available.

Witnesses testifying in a preliminary hearing against Wayne Lovato on Monday claimed that the youth was speeding when he leaned over and tried to kiss a girl riding in the front passenger seat of his car before the fatal wreck that left two teens dead and several others injured.

“We were on the highway, Wayne leaned over to kiss Kayla (Esquibel) and that’s when we flipped,” said Reyes Rubio, 21, testifying during a lengthy hearing before juvenile court Judge Abigail Aragon on Monday.

Audit: More than 50 inmates released early

More than 50 inmates were mistakenly released early from New Mexico prisons, including a convicted murderer with more than four years left to serve, according to a new state audit released Wednesday.

The New Mexico Corrections Department said most of 51 offenders identified in the audit of 6,900 inmate files were erroneously released from September 2010 and September 2012 due to miscalculations on time left to serve.

Highlands to get new digs in Santa Fe

New Mexico Highlands University representatives joined Santa Fe Higher Education Center officials for the April 23 groundbreaking for the HEC’s new building.

Highlands University was the first public university in New Mexico to sign the higher education partnership agreement with the HEC in 2010. Highlands has operated a Santa Fe site since 1996 through a partnership with Santa Fe Community College.

All Alonzo - Mora runner achieves trifecta at state meet

Good things came in threes for Mora senior distance runner Alonzo Chavez over the weekend at the Class 1A-2A state track and field championships.

Chavez went three for three, racing to state championships in the 800-meter run, the 1,600-meter run and the 3,200-meter run, capping a history-making prep career with the Rangers.

Going into the meet, Texico senior Colton Hollis loomed as Chavez’s main competition. But while Hollis did provide a challenge, the Mora star had the superior kick each time.
