It’s not unusual for critics of City Hall to show up at Council meetings to vent their frustrations.

The times that those critics have begun to talk about a specific governing board member or city employee, they have been interrupted by the city attorney and told that they are out of order.

By contrast, those who show up at Council meetings to praise specific governing body members or city employees are allowed to speak uninterrupted.

Monday, July 6 — Although there were a few familiar Democratic faces missing, more than 500 party faithful crowded into University Hall Thursday night to listen to Gov. Jack Campbell pay tribute to Apolonio Duran, chairman of the San Miguel County Democratic Central Committee, and to outline the accomplishments of the party, in the nation and state, during the past two years. There have been local efforts to unseat Duran as chairman.

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Supreme Court on Monday upheld a state law capping residential property tax valuation increases until a home changes ownership.
Critics of the law contend it causes “tax lightning” for new homeowners when the valuation of a house is reassessed for market value. The property taxes for new homeowners can end up much higher than their neighbors who’ve lived in a house for many years.

The head of New Mexico’s lottery system wants the state Legislature to cut the 30 percent minimum it is required to provide in revenues to the college scholarship program, noting such a move could increase lottery sales and create an even larger revenue stream for the program.
