My name is Ray Gallegos, and I was born in Las Vegas, N.M. I retired from education last year and have more than 35 years of educational experience as a teacher and administrator. My role as a single parent of two daughters may prove to be the most credible of my qualifications to comment on education.

City ‘won’t run out of water’

With the snowpack water equivalent at about .2 inches, water flow in the Gallinas at about one-eighth of what it was last year and city reservoirs only being about 65 percent full, 2013 is shaping up to be another difficult year in terms of the city’s water situation.

But Las Vegas Utilities Direct Ken Garcia says the city has contingency plans in place to ensure that Las Vegas’ water supply doesn’t dry up.

“We’re not going to run out of water,” he told the City Council during an impromptu water presentation on Wednesday.

New Mexico Highlands University representatives joined Santa Fe Higher Education Center officials for the April 23 groundbreaking for the HEC’s new building.

Highlands University was the first public university in New Mexico to sign the higher education partnership agreement with the HEC in 2010. Highlands has operated a Santa Fe site since 1996 through a partnership with Santa Fe Community College.

West seeks to shore up...

West Las Vegas School district officials are hard at work preparing next year’s budget, and they say the outlook for next year is better than it has been for years.

“I am very happy to say that we haven’t seen a budget this good in quite a few years,” Superintendent Gene Parson said. “We almost feel certain to a point that we can be off emergency supplemental funding.”

So far, the district is expecting next year’s operating budget for next year to be $12.7 million.

Kim Carpenter, a Highlands University alumnus and co-author of the New York Times best selling book The Vow,  urged the university’s graduates to go out and make the world a better place.

“There is an urgency to go out and make a difference...,” said Carpenter, the keynote speaker at the commencement ceremony at John A. Wilson Complex Saturday. “You are the future.”

Las Vegas police now have three suspects in custody in connection with the Saturday morning shooting death of Angel Arroyo, 32, at an apartment on the 1100 block of 12th  Street that was then torched in an apparent effort to cover up the crime.

“We cannot stop every major crime but we have proven to be very successful at apprehending suspects on major crimes very quickly in order to keep our community safe,” said Christian Montano, Las Vegas Police Chief.

For many teens, high school years are about proms, homecoming, Friday night football games, basketball games and plenty of fun. For Kayla Romero they were filled with countless doctor visits, trips to Denver for treatments, and hospital stays as she battled re-occurring Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

But Romero has refused to let the devastating disease get the best of her. On Friday evening, Romero will join her Mora High School classmates and receive a diploma that she worked tirelessly for despite battling the disease not once but twice during her four years of high school.

Eleven New Mexico newspapers began sharing content this week as part of a newly created service named Community News Exchange, or CNEx, which is spearheaded by former Optic publisher Tom McDonald.

The Exchange  focuses on small-town community news in New Mexico, seeking to report on issues of interest to readers in the more rural areas of the state. Its intent is to supplement community newspapers with content that no other service provides.

New Mexico Highlands social work professor Andrew Israel has been  named a Fulbright Specialist by the United States Department of State.

Israel’s Fulbright service will be this summer at Ndejje University in Kamala, capital of the Republic of Uganda in East Africa. He will advise the university’s administration and social work faculty in further developing curriculum and ethical practices.
