People who live around Mike Mateo Elementary in Sapello heard explosions and felt the ground shake at about 8 p.m. Tuesday night.

State police Sgt Emmanuel Gutierrez said his agency’s Ordnance Disposal Team was in the area detonating abandoned dynamite that they were called in to dispose of. He said some 40 sticks of dynamite were detonated. There were no injuries, and no foul play is suspected, Gutierrez said.

The Las Vegas Train Robbers’ success in a home-and-home series with Trinidad has paid off in the Pecos League standings.

At 19-13, Las Vegas has closed to within one game of first place in the North Division. The Triggers, who enjoyed a four-game cushion just a few days back, now hold a tenuous lead at 18-12 overall.

Fort Union National Monument’s annual “Cultural Encounters” weekend on Saturday, June 22 and Sunday, June 23. The event weekend is free and open to the public and runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Special emphasis will be placed on the Southwest in 1863, talks and demonstrations will be given, highlighting the military campaigns and actions which connected Fort Union to the Long Walk of Mescalero Apache and Navajo in 1863.

Program puts inmates to work

SANTA FE —  Don’t be alarmed at the sight of orange jumpsuits outside the state Capitol. It’s just your tax dollars at work.
For roughly a month, a New Mexico agency has been paying “low-risk” inmates from the Penitentiary of New Mexico, south of Santa Fe, a dollar an hour to move furniture, paint, help with landscaping and do other tasks at state government buildings around the capital city.

Less than three years ago, the Luna Community College Board of Trustees approved a strict nepotism policy that prohibits the college from hiring a person who is related to a current board member, administrator or employee of the college, except in limited circumstances.

GLORIETA — The father of a man shot and killed by a New Mexico State Police officer has filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit.
KRQE-TV reports that the federal lawsuit was recently filed by Daniel T. Pauly, the father of Samuel Pauly.
