Mora’s Chavez hunts a trifecta

Finding motivation to run hard hasn’t always been simple this season for Mora’s Alonzo Chavez.

Chavez has dominated the distance events, and in the absence of close rivals, he’s found himself alone in the front of the pack more often than not.

This weekend, however, there is a clear motivation — the possibility of a sweep in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 at the Class 1A-2A state track and field championships. UNM’s track complex plays host to the small-school state meet Friday and Saturday.

Audit: More than 50 inmates...

More than 50 inmates were mistakenly released early from New Mexico prisons, including a convicted murderer with more than four years left to serve, according to a new state audit released Wednesday.

The New Mexico Corrections Department said most of 51 offenders identified in the audit of 6,900 inmate files were erroneously released from September 2010 and September 2012 due to miscalculations on time left to serve.

Three RHS netters take state

Add some more names to that championship wall adorning the LeRoy Fulgenzi tennis complex at Robertson High.

Juliana Guerin won her second consecutive (and third overall) Class 1A-3A state girls’ singles championship this past Thursday at Jerry Cline Complex in Albuquerque.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals’ David Romero and Amadeo Lopez paired up to win the boys’ doubles title.

Guerin outgunned friendly nemesis Paloma Gomez of St. Michael’s in a 6-2, 6-3, final match Thursday evening to wrap a dominant two-day run.

All-RMAC baseball: Six from NMHU

Six New Mexico Highlands University baseball players were selected to the All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams this year.  

The Cowboys, led by head coach Steve Jones, finished the season with a 29-24 record. As a No. 3 seed in the 2013 RMAC Tournament, they went 1-2, losing to eventual runner-up and national powerhouse Colorado Mesa in an elimination game Saturday.

In its 134-year history, the Optic has changed ownership 10 times, though three of those owners held the newspaper for less than two years. After Hub Kane died of a sudden heart attack in 1947, the Optic was run by a board of trustees headed by attorney Louis C. Ilfeld (Charles Ilfeld’s son), and included Kane’s widow, Helen Kelly Kane. The trustees and Mrs. Kane ran the paper for a brief period, but less than a year after Hub Kane’s death, the Optic was sold to Orville E. Priestly.

Coaching jobs open at RHS, WLV

Three major Meadow City head coaching positions — two at Robertson and one at West Las Vegas — recently opened up for applicants, school officials confirmed this week.

West Las Vegas plans to advertise its varsity boys’ basketball post after opting not to renew head coach Ernie Rodriguez’s contract, WLVS Superintendent Gene Parson said Wednesday.

“We’re going to open the position,” Parson said. “At this time, we’re choosing to go in a different direction.”
