    THUMBS UP! NEW DEAN FOR SOCIAL WORK
    A Highlands University social faculty member now has a new title. The University has announced the appointment of Christina Duran as the new dean of the Facundo Valdez School of Social Work. Duran is no stranger to the area, having served as the school’s interim associate dean since July 2014. She brings impressive credentials to her new position. She earned her Ph.D. degree in American Studies and has a Master’s degree in Social Work from UCLA. We look forward to her assuming duties as dean for the growing department.

    The New Mexico Legislature convenes next week, and it promises to be a feisty one. The 60-day session begins on Tuesday, Jan. 17 and will run through March 18.

    Alzheimer’s disease is our most expensive illness, costing an estimated $236 billion last year, including nearly 1 in every 5 dollars spent through Medicare.

    It is also one of our most devastating, ripping from seniors the precious memories of their long lives, and taking from friends and family members the person they knew. For all involved, it makes the final months or years before death excruciatingly sad and painful.

    What do you suppose Ed, Art and Art Jr. did Monday night? One safe bet is that these Abreu family members gathered around a TV set to watch the national college championship football game between the Clemson Tigers and the Alabama Crimson Tide.

    And why any particular interest in this game? They watched because they enjoy high-quality football but mainly because Ed, who is the son of Edward Leland Abreu, was a starting player for the South Carolina team some 39 years ago, in the Gator Bowl.
