  • LETTER: Follow rules already in place

I am extremely interested in the issue of drilling for oil and gas now before us in Mora County.

This, truly, is the time for our Mora County commissioners and the planning and zoning officials to stand behind the excellent Development Guidance System and Comprehensive Land Use Guidelines. These documents are well articulated and should remain in their original design.

  • Editorial Thumbs

thumb UP for ... CLEARING UP THE PROBLEM. District Judge Eugenio Mathis has stepped down as chief judge, who is in charge of assigning caseloads. This move was precipitated by a state Supreme Court decision.

Last year, Mathis married his assistant, Michelle Pino, and that concerned the state Supreme Court. Our review of the state court system’s nepotism policy doesn’t address a situation in which a supervisor married someone who is already employed. So a case could have been made that Mathis and Pino were technically in compliance with the rules.

  • LETTER: Student did really well in competition

The family and friends of Chantelle Lucero would like to send her congratulations.  Chantelle traveled with West Las Vegas Middle School to Dallas Texas in June 2009 to compete in the Business Professionals of America as the only high school student representing West Las Vegas High.

We are very proud of our middle school for taking first in the completion. Chantelle placed within the top 10 in Dallas and later on found out she ranked fifth overall.

We would also like to thank Chantelle’s sponsor, Laurie Sandoval, for all her time, support and leadership.

  • WORK OF ART: Menudo? No thanks

Every fourth week we used to go through Expulsion Saturday. It was the time when at Mom’s insistence and our extremely willing compliance she’d usher Dad and all us kids out of the house to fend for ourselves.

We had the whole day free. My siblings Bingy, Severino and I generally spent that day at the Serf Theater, where the films were continuous, and by the time we left there, we had all the lines and songs memorized.

    Let me explain:

  • In a sense, we're all conformists

When I was in seventh grade, my social studies teacher told my class that we cared too much about the brand names on our jeans. He said kids looked down on those who wore cheaper versions such as Plain Pockets.

As it turned out, I was wearing Plain Pockets that day. I sank in my chair.

But my teacher wasn't singling me out, as I feared. I noticed later that he wore Plain Pockets corduroys.

Many like to say that they are non-conformists. But when it comes to standards of dress, nearly everyone likes to blend in.

  • Editorial: A plus for Las Vegas

Today, Highlands University officials will cut the ribbon for its new dorms. The truth is that the residence hall has been done for weeks; this ceremony is, of course, merely a formality.

This was the biggest construction project in Las Vegas since Alta Vista Regional Hospital was built five years ago. And it’s a sign of the times for Highlands.

  • Editorial: Thumbs

Thumb UP for ... AN ECONOMIC BOOSTER. The Rough Rider Motorcycle Rally has only been around for four years, but it’s already become one of the state’s major biker events. Authorities estimate that some 3,500 motorcyclists showed up in the Meadow City — whatever way you cut it, that’s a shot in the arm for the local economy.

The organizers of the event deserve kudos for their hard work all year long to produce an event that puts the town on the biker map.

  • Letter: Online posting was totally false

Regarding the online Reader Comments under editorial Thumbs in the July 24 edition of the Optic, one of the statements was totally false. Mr. [Alexander] Milliken has made three separate purchases in the Ojitos Frios area in the past nine years. One was brokered by Margo Cutler Real Estate on was brokered by Michael Gregory Real Estate and the third was a private sale. Home and Land professionals LLC and Barbara Feldman have not had a role in any of the transaction involving Mr. Milliken.
