  • Mil Gracias - April 30, 2012

Casa de Cultura, Tri-County Farmers Market, Barter Hours and Farm to Restaurant Project Main Street wish to extend their mil gracias to all attendees to the third annual Las Vegas Seed Exchange, “Compartindo Semillas” at Luna Community College.

Special thanks to Adrienne Obrien, Luna Culinary Arts instructor, and the Culinary Arts Club for preparing a delicious lunch of native foods.

Thanks to Luna administration for providing the venue for the third straight year and assisting us in creating a tradition that can only grow in the future.

  • Thumbs - Our high country lowdown on the news - April 27, 2012

THUMBS DOWN! DRY AND DRIER. Once again, we’re off to a parched start. According to an Associated Press report this week, by mid-April all of New Mexico was categorized as abnormally to exceptionally dry, which means that farmers and ranchers are already scrambling to find ways to irrigate their land.

  • Nuestra Historia - Gov. Ezequiel C de Baca of Las Vegas

Our Centennial series would be incomplete if we did not recount the life of Ezequiel C de Baca, New Mexico’s second governor and first lieutenant governor — and one of the great sons of Las Vegas.

In 1916, from his modest home in Old Town, C de Baca waged his successful campaign to become New Mexico’s second governor. Tragically, he would die on the 49th day of his governorship — administering the affairs of state from his hospital bed in Santa Fe.

  • Editorial cartoon like trash talk

Regarding the editorial cartoon published on Friday, April 20 ... (it) shows an uneducated, biased opinion about Republicans and conservatives. Those kinds of cartoons, which obviously you select, are offensive to me and those people I know who are Republicans.

  • God-loving folks take offense

A very divisive political cartoon on April 20 is the assault on the right by lies and distortions.

Who on the right has ever said:  No Mexicans? End welfare? War on women? All Muslims terrorize? Hooded blacks scare us?

These are the mantras of the far left to deflect from unconstitutional takeovers by the far left.

As for gay marriage, just get big government out of our private lives! And, “Obama a Muslim”? His speech, acts, friends and name change at age 19 indicate as much.

  • Find a better way to treat our dogs

I have been reading letters to the editor, pro and con, concerning the dog-tethering ordinance passed by the Las Vegas City Council. I also googled everything I could find on this subject and think I understand both sides of the issue.

It seems to me that those opposed to the non-tethering ordinance mostly object on a financial basis. Trust me, I get it. I cannot have a Mercedes for the exact same reason. Those against tethering dogs believe it is cruel and dangerous for the dog.
