  • Nuestra Historia: How Gov. Cargo won San Miguel County, twice

Gov. David Cargo loved San Miguel and Mora counties, and never tired of expressing his affection for the people of this area. A Republican, he was especially proud that both times he ran for governor he carried San Miguel County, a Democratic bastion.

  • Another Perspective - Schools not funded adequately

Recent events at Las Vegas City Schools surrounding the budget have led to finger pointing and confusion. The local teachers’ union has resisted another cut in pay for teachers (in exchange for days off), also known as furlough days. Some people think that jobs may have been saved had the local NEA leadership agreed to the furloughs. While this may be true, there’s more to it than that.

  • Fiestas a big disappointment

This year’s fiesta was a big disappointment to me — not because of what was included in the fiesta but because of what was missing.

My friend and neighbor Ben (Benerito) Gallegos and his group, Los Charros, were missing.

I enjoy Los Charros and their traditional Spanish music when Ben, his wife, Theresa, and their son James perform as a family and also when they perform with additional musicians in their group.

  • Taxpayer funds are being wasted

Remember when a group of lawyers (Supreme Court Judges) told us they selected George W. Bush to be President of the United States of America, thus disenfranchising all our Presidential election votes?
Now, our Las Vegas city administration keeps paying for expensive legal opinion after legal opinion with taxpayer provided revenues, which could be put to better use to address the myriad issues affecting our fair city.

  • Mil Gracias - July 12, 2013

On behalf of the Old Town business community and greater Las Vegas downtown merchants, we would like to express our sincere thanks and job well done to the city of Las Vegas for improvements at the Valencia Street parking lot for Bridge Street and Plaza Park merchants and visitors.
MainStreet de Las Vegas received New Mexico MainStreet capital outlay funds in 2009 for a Downtown Master Plan resulting in the public’s response that the No. 1 priority for downtown was parking in the Old Town commercial area.

  • Cargo left quite a legacy

His nickname may have been “Lonesome Dave,” but former Gov. David F. Cargo had more than his share of friends in Mora and San Miguel counties, and that wasn’t by accident.
