Today's Opinions

  • The comforts of solitary confinement

Last week Carole Pearson wrote about Amnesty International’s concern regarding the size and thus comfort level of solitary confinement cells in prisons.

Also last week a man walked into an Aurora, Colo. theater, murdered a dozen, and injured scores more.

If one applies AI’s concern to James Holmes, our most recent mass murderer, I wonder if they’ll be requesting a larger cell for Mr. Holmes to ensure he is justifiably comfortable? I suspect they’ll wait awhile until other news overrides his murder spree and then ask for some compassion for Mr. Holmes.

  • Smoke may be cause of health problems

I read the letter by Lorenzo Flores (“‘Disindependence’ for Las Vegas,” published July 20) and found myself agreeing with most of his points, although not about the Fiesta Queen. However, one sentence caught my attention.

On behalf of The La Plaza Little League Girls 10 and 11 year-old Softball Team, I would like to recognize local businesses and individuals that helped us on our trek to the district and state tournament.

As many of you may already know, our team made the state championship game.

  • Raising the rates

It may have been another one of those 3-2 votes, but the Las Vegas City Council did the right thing at its meeting last week. The council, with the mayor as tie-breaker, voted to publish two ordinances that will set the stage for water and sewer increases possibly as early as next month. As we’ve said previously in this editorial space, the increases may be painful but they’re necessary to move the city toward long-term solutions to its water needs.

THE NORTH ATLANTIC — On one of our across-the-Atlantic flights to visit our son Stan, his wife and children, we noticed several passengers who had positioned themselves in the middle seat of the middle row. My wife and I had been content with our seat assignment, a window seat and the one next to it.

Members of the Gallegos family celebrated the 105th birthday of their matriarch, Rosita M. Gallegos, in June. Her favorite Mexican foods were served. Pereece Gallegos baked two beautiful cakes for her grandmother. Thank you, Pereece.

Vida Encantada Nursing Home also provided a large birthday cake for the occasion. The family would like to thank them also. Vida Encantada provided their dining room for the family to meet. It was appreciated by everyone as Rose has a large family.

  • Policing Highlands

Accusations of poor management against the Highlands University police department and its chief, Donato Sena, have been percolating for some time now, and while we’re not inclined to jump into the middle of the “personnel matters” they’re coming from, we do think that some further explanation is in order.
