  • Thumbs - Our high country lowdown on the news

THUMBS UP! INFORMATIVE FORUM. Water, the chamber contract, the city’s plan for a gateway into town, and much, much more were fodder for discussion at Monday’s mayoral candidate forum held at Memorial Middle School by the Optic. About 75 people attended the event and got to see all eight candidates addressing the issues, sometimes with rock-solid reasoning, other times with a fair amount of passion.

  • Ortiz dedicated to city, state issues

I would like to express my support for Mayor Alfonso E. Ortiz Jr. in his bid to be re-elected mayor of Las Vegas.

It has been my extreme honor to have worked with Mayor Ortiz on many boards and committees for the New Mexico Municipal League.

The League is an organization that represents all 104 municipalities in New Mexico and Mayor Ortiz has been an integral part of its outstanding service to our communities. Mayor Ortiz serves on the League’s Board of Directors and has championed several issues throughout his tenure.

  • Gurulé-Giron very qualified

We the women of Las Vegas need to work for and elect one of our gender for mayor of this city. We have a golden opportunity by all of us getting together and electing Tonita Gurulé-Giron as mayor.

Tonita is very qualified and well versed, probably better than anyone around. Definitely we need a change if we want to better this city.

We have seen the good work she has done as councilor, despite the fact that she gets no help from the other councilors, except for one. I don’t think there is a better qualified person than Tonita.

  • Retirees deserve their pension plan

I am writing this on behalf of the Retired Public Employees of New Mexico, a nonprofit organization in existence since 1962. Our mission is to give a voice to retired public employees about the retirement benefits they were promised and worked so hard for, including the cost-of-living adjustment.

  • Let’s not take a step backward

After listening to and reading about those folks who are running for election for mayor and council positions, I see a very broad spectrum of experience, knowledge, intelligence, personal integrity and spoken intentions. What I also see is the chance that Las Vegas stands to take a big step backward if the wrong (my opinion) people are voted into office.

  • Nuestra Historia - The mean season begins for New Mexico

Referring to New Mexico’s ancient capital, a Congressional committee reported in 1888 that Santa Fe “is wretchedly built and the inhabitants, with the exception of a few Americans residing in the place, are ignorant and degraded, and the place bears an evil reputation as one of the most miserable towns on the globe.”
