  • Let’s hear other side of abortion debate

Regarding Frank Splendoria’s column, this American citizen is still awaiting the other and legal view in a column on a woman’s right to choose what will happen to her body.

  • Writer responds to column

This is a follow up to Mr. Tripps recent, interesting comments and thoughts regarding “42” the Jackie Robinson story. My take on this movie is if you went to see Chadwick Boseman’s portrayal of Jackie Robinson you might be disappointed.

Admittedly, I went to the movie expecting to focus on the Jackie Robinson story, but low and behold, I was captivated by Harrison Fords stunning portrayal of Branch Rickey. Just imagine for every hate letter Jackie Robinson received, Branch Rickey received 10 or more.

  • Don’t use self checkout counters

Has anyone else noticed the sudden increase in self checkout counters at Wal-mart? Has anyone stopped to think how many of our fellow community members have lost their jobs because of this increase?

I say don’t ever use a self checkout counter. Wait in line if you have to. If the lines are too long, go up to the manager and ask them to open another register. They can’t make us use self checkout.

I don’t want to be responsible for my neighbors and friends losing their jobs. We are all struggling enough to get by and pay our bills.

  • Right call by East board

Congratulations to the Las Vegas City Schools Board of Education for its courageous decision to revert back to a five-day school week when classes begin in August.

We had serious concerns about the four-day week from the beginning. Chief among them was our feeling that it’s just not possible to cram five days of instruction into a four-day week, no matter how dedicated teachers and students are.

The teachers we have spoken with echoed that concern.

  • Work of Art — Zip-adee-do, Dad!

“Nice going, Hemingway!” I thought to myself as this 230-pound body, tethered to a harness, sped down a slope called Inspiration Point, near Branson, Mo.

Imagine a 75-year-old man fantasizing about running with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain, a subject Ernest Hemingway wrote about, or in the style of George Plimpton, imagining that an average writer would play quarterback for the Detroit Lions, the inspiration for “Paper Lion,” a book and movie about such an accomplishment.
