  • Work of Art - ‘You were never my age’

“Why, when I was your age . . . “ It’s impossible to utter those six words, in that sequence, without having someone come up with, “Yes, we already know: You had to walk to school five miles, uphill both ways, in deep snow.”

So I won’t be mentioning the daily trudges through snow, in freezing weather that lasted from December to December. Nor will I write about the distance of our treks.

  • The center of it all

Let’s see if we can look at the 2012 campaign for the presidency from a common sense point of view, because just sticking with the facts isn’t as easy as one might think.

  • Editor's Note - No better man

Real men. I’ve known a few. Old-school men who faced down fears and conquered their world. Strong men who took on great challenges.

Fighters, lovers, warriors, leaders, competitors, champions — even losers who never quit even when they knew they’d been beaten. These were men who stood their ground.

But none of them had more of an impact on my life than my father. To me, he was always a giant among men.

  • Thumbs - Our high country lowdown on the news - Sept. 14, 2012

THUMBS DOWN! NINETY POUNDS AND CHILD ABUSE. Drive through Las Vegas once with no seat belt fastened, en route to see a sick uncle in Santa Fe (you say), and maybe a deputy will let you off with a warning. Drive through again, going the other way, and maybe the officer will get suspicious. And if you happen to be carrying about 90 pounds of marijuana, your trip might just come to an abrupt end here.

  • Gridlock, debt are Democrats’ fault

How can you perpetuate the lies against the GOP as regards to gridlock and the national debt as stated in your Sept. 3 editorial?

Great damage was done during the Democratic-controlled Senate and House from 2001 to 2010: A fact never mentioned by leftist media.
Thank God, the GOP took over the House in 2010 to slow the damages created by uncontrolled liberals! Every budget the House has proposed since 2010 is buried by the Democratic-controlled Senate. This Democratic Senate is the cause of all gridlock!

  • Reproductive rights an economic issue

Glaringly absent from Frank Splendoria’s Sept. 7 letter was any mention of poverty and social justice. Very strange, considering these issues are directly relevant to “the principle[s] of the profound, inherent, and equal dignity of every member of the human family.”

  • Vote for Obama and Heinrich

I am a Democrat ... and I am urging all of my fellow Democrats who live in San Miguel County to turn out and vote for President Barack Obama and Senate candidate Martin Heinrich on this Election Day.

I am especially asking all of the Latinos For Obama to turn out and vote for Obama and Heinrich on Election Day, because we cannot win this election without you.
