  • Turbines remove beauty, wildlife

I am 11 years old. I come to Ribera every summer from California to visit. The one thing that keeps me wanting to come back is the natural beauty. I love staring up at the mesa, but, if you put the turbines up, the natural beauty of it will be destroyed along with all the wildlife, which we should protect, not destroy.

  • A great experience at Alta Vista

About two weeks ago, at a women's’ meeting, the conversation gyrated toward medical care, hospitals, etc.

I mentioned that my husband, age 82, was scheduled two days later for a colonoscopy.

One of the ladies asked where the procedure would be done, Taos or Santa Fe. When I told them that we were going to Alta Vista, one would, judging by the expression of their faces, have thought that he planned to enter the Gates of the House of Horrors and deliver himself into the claws of some evil Klingon Creature.

  • Public servant

It would be a disservice to define Tony Marquez, who died Friday at age 43, simply according to his two years as mayor of Las Vegas. His life and his work were so much more.

  • Work of Art: What exactly is a ‘jefito’?

    By Art Trujillo

Well, I wish I’d had the pleasure. In Thursday’s Journal, I read a detailed obituary for Ruben Cobos, the author of “A Dictionary of New Mexico and Southern Colorado Spanish.”

For years, we’ve had a copy of the latest revised edition in our house and at work. Cobos, who died last week at age 99, provided quite a service, especially helpful to people like me, who grew up with Spanglish and who as a youngster, just knew that we often speak a different slanguage.

  • A continuing distraction

Mora County Sheriff Roy Cordova has a month left of his term in his post. We sure wish he would step down now.

We protested loudly when he took another job in September as a deputy sheriff in Valencia County while still collecting his paycheck of more than $40,000 a year as Mora County sheriff. With the other job, Cordova only worked about half of his 40-hour shift as sheriff.

  • Candidates should consider...

Last week, potential school board members got some tips on what it’s like to serve on a board of education. The training was offered by a relatively new local group, the Community Committee for Better Schools.

This group deserves credit for taking positive action to make sure we get good folks on our school boards. The elections are in February.
Some people run because they’re hoping to take someone else off a board. That’s not a good reason for serving the community. One should have a genuine desire to improve our schools.

  • Aircraft noise a big health issue

We need to know the predicted effects of training flights from Cannon Air Force Base. The city exemption is sufficient for pause. Will other concentrated population areas receive similar consideration?

Are we likely to be rocked awake weekly, monthly or nightly?
Are we likely to find ourselves on a preferred flight path?
Will we have any recourse in an intolerable situation?
