  • Just a thought - Looking for more reasons to celebrate

    By: Rick Kraft

It is too bad life can’t be just a series of celebrations.

I often compare life to a roller coaster.

Sometimes we are anxious and scared about what lies ahead, sometimes we yell with everything we have, and sometimes we just relax and smile peacefully.

When was the last time you celebrated? What is it that you celebrated? Whether it is a relative’s birthday, your wedding date, your consecutive years of not drinking, or a family member graduating, there is plenty out there to celebrate.

  • Beth Speaks for Herself - Not many advantages to being left-handed

    By Beth Urech

If you’re right-handed, you may be oblivious to us “lefties.”

But we pay attention to us. If I’m in a restaurant and the server writes with his left hand, I will mention it. If I’m signing for a prescription, the pharmacist may comment, “Oh, you’re left-handed, too.”

In this world where so many are disengaged and disenfranchised, it’s a comfort to make even fleeting connections, and you know I am all about connections.

  • Another Perspective - Racists aren’t born — they’re made by people

The follwing editorial recently appeared in The Taos News

The challenge for all of us is how to unmake and stop the kind of racism that reared its ugly head in the most public way possible last week in Charlottesville, Virginia.

It will require examining our own prejudices, listening to those who disagree with us, and engaging in civil discourse. But it starts with naming — not defending — the actions of white nationalists.

    Revisit LCC role

Unfortunately the colleges/universities in New Mexico have been suffering for several years as a result of the funding the state has not been able to provide.

That lack of funding only leads to layoffs and not filling positions that become vacant. Progress can never be achieved when one has to focus on where to cut rather than where to grow.

THUMBS DOWN! GET SEARCH COMMITTEE ROLLING
Since the recent resignation of Luna Community College President Leroy “Huero” Sanchez, there has been a lot of silence among board members as to how Sanchez is being replaced.

Most public boards make the selection through a search committee.

  • Dispatch New Mexico - A tale of two flailing Republicans

Let’s take a look at two Republicans, President Trump and New Mexico’s own Roman Jimenez, and their remarks in the aftermath of the Charlottesville violence.

In case you missed it, Jimenez was chairman of the Doña Ana County Republican Party up until last week, when he was pressured into resigning after a rant he posted on social media. Here’s what he wrote on Facebook, exactly as he wrote it:

  • Women really are wired differently

John Stossel is the author of “No They Can’t! Why Government Fails — But Individuals Succeed.”

Why aren’t there more women criminals?! Men in jail outnumber women by a ratio of 14-to-1. We male stutterers outnumber women, too.

This isn’t fair! We need more affirmative action! These disparities must be caused by sex discrimination because everyone knows there are no real differences between genders.
