    The Justice Department’s decision to begin phasing out the use of private prisons is at once a milestone in criminal justice reform and an acknowledgment that the benefits of privatizing government functions were greatly oversold.

    When people laugh at a pun, they’re really just being polite, and it’s possible the ones who laughed didn’t catch the word play. But when someone groans, well, that’s the sign of a clever pun with the added message that the groaner “got it,” as in caught on.

    A pun, according to the dictionary, is “a joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a word or the fact that there are words that sound alike but have different meanings.”

    Take animal abuse cases seriously
    Regarding the mistrial in the case of the dog named Hubble, I don’t care who dropped the ball in this animal abuse/neglect case; the fact remains and appears as if our community doesn’t really take such cases seriously. This makes our city look as if we are living in the past when some people used to think an animal was just an animal with no thought of compassion.

    Every one of us knows a couple whose marriage has stood the test of time. A grandparent or great grandparent type couple who truly enjoy each other’s company after 50 or 60 years of being committed to one another. Truth be known, each of these couples has both weathered storms and experienced sunny days...

    I had the opportunity to attend a recent Michael Martin Murphey concert and to enjoy it from the front row. I have enjoyed his music over the years and have been able to attend several of his concerts over the decades. He is now 71.
