  • The cost of DWI

    If ever there were a cautionary tale about drinking and driving, it would be the Wayne Lovato case.

    Lovato, 19, pleaded guilty to two counts of child abuse resulting in death and to one count of child abuse not resulting in death or great bodily harm stemming from a 2013 alcohol-related crash that left two young girls dead and several others injured.

    It’s all a matter of perspective. The year 2014 might have been a great one for you. Or it could have been hell. I hope for your sake it was the former rather than the latter, but either way it’s a good time to look back — and forward.

    Politically, it was a rough year for the Democrats, both here in New Mexico and in the halls of Congress. Gary King got trounced in November, but we all pretty much knew that was going to happen. It must have been a tough, tough year for the retiring attorney general, as he started out behind and lost ground from there.

    THUMBS UP! PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH AT HIGHLANDS
    We applaud the Highlands University Board of Regents for the manner in which it is conducting the search for its next president. Regents decided last week to appoint a 13-member search committee to screen applicants and come up with a more manageable pool of applicants for the board. Regents will then conduct interviews and ultimately decide who will be the university’s next president. Regents appointed Doyle Daves to lead that search committee, and that was a wise choice. We wish the committee luck in its work.

  • Just a Thought - Setting off a catalytic reaction

    Do you bring about positive change in the life you live? When you go to bed at night, is the world a better place than it was when you woke up because of some action or actions you took during the day?

    Do you have the ability to take a negative thrown at you and respond with a positive? Are you able to bring about positive change to those around you without yourself being consumed?

    Maybe you are a catalyst. Maybe you are a catalyst for change.

    Houston Chronicle on the border being more secure than it was a decade ago (Dec. 17):
    Texas Department of Public Safety chief Steve McCraw said recently his agency will install 4,000 cameras along the Rio Grande, the state’s 1,254-mile border with Mexico, as part of the ongoing “border surge” against illegal immigration.
