  • Read and follow school policy

Why is Principal (Steve) Sandoval being made the  scapegoat for doing a job that he has been hired to do? Most people agree discipline should start at home; unfortunately these days there are  individuals being sent into our public schools who lack the discipline and are interfering on the rights of our children who go to school to get an education in a safe and drug free environment.

  • Standing up for a good principal

Regarding the alleged bullying incidents occurring at West Las Vegas Middle School, I have had many encounters with Mr. Steve Sandoval over the years as a friend, as a parent of a West Las Vegas Middle School student, and as a member of our educational community. Mr. Sandoval has always treated me, and those that I have observed him with, with kindness and fairness.

  • Time to put an end to dog tethering

It’s the 21st century, and as a nation we have stopped doing many things that were considered OK in days gone by. We no longer force small children to work in sweat shops, or forbid women to vote, or make African Americans sit in the back of the bus.

It’s the 21st century, and it’s time for Las Vegas to join the rest of America in doing away with the cruel practice of tethering dogs.

  • Husband’s firing was unjustified

I wanted to write this letter of utter disbelief to inform the community of a  horrible injustice happening in Las Vegas.

Many of you know my husband “Officer Cruz.” He’s been a police officer for over 20 years. Recently, he was working at the New Mexico Highlands University Police Department under Chief Donato Sena.

  • The gala’s success

Could the success of Saturday night’s Highlands University President’s Gala be a watershed accomplishment for Las Vegas? To hear some people talking about the event, it just might be the beginning of something even bigger.

Of course, it’s easy to say it was a great success for a good cause, since more than $100,000 was netted for student scholarships, but what went into the gala, and what was celebrated, adds exponentially to its overall value.

  • Work of Art - Hopefully this is correct

The issue still isn’t settled. It might never be. Hopefully, this column will enlighten some people and bring a few to my way of thinking. Notice I said “hopefully.”

For years, language purists recoiled in horror over the misuse of words and phrases that the Miss Grundys of our youth would implore us to avoid.

    Let me explain:

  • The value of runoffs

With the conclusion of the first-ever municipal election runoffs for Las Vegas, perhaps it’s a good time to assess the value of runoffs. The city has made a significant investment in the process, so now’s a good time to take stock.
