Letters

  • Remarks were unjustified

This letter is in reference to the article printed on May 6 in the Las Vegas Optic regarding statements made by the Las Vegas City Schools Business Manager Myrna Garcia.

  • Chamber should take a lead role

In December 2009, I wrote up a proposal that was to be shared with the Economic Development Corporation and the Chamber of Commerce. The purpose of the proposal was to come up with ideas for what could be done to increase the economic development of Las Vegas and the surrounding area. I never did hear anything about the proposal after I gave it to the Chamber.

I would like to share a brief overview of that proposal with you now.

  • Sorry Ulibarri’s column ended

With dismay I read that Rock Ulibarri’s column of July 1 would be his last. His and Jesus Lopez’ columns on the history of our town and area have been truly outstanding.

I am almost a native New Mexican though I was absent for those turbulent ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s. I spent them in other areas of equal turmoil, if sometimes for different reasons.

  • Ideas to conserve even more water

    Ideas to further conserve water:

    • One can catch handwashing water from a cut used gallon water jug set in the sink.

    • Wash dishes by hand to collect rinse dish water (don't use garbage disposers).

    • Collect tub water using a gallon jug as a scoop.

    • Wash clothes by hand and use leftover water to flush the toilet, and or water plants outside or save for future use in a five gallon used clean paint jug.

A trip of a lifetime for Valley Middle School, West Las Vegas Middle School and High School students was made possible by numerous supporters. The students traveled to our nation’s capital Washington D.C. in May. They attended the Business Professionals of America National Conference for nearly a week. At the conference, the students’ excelled in their respective BPA events and came home with numerous awards. The West Las Vegas Middle School placed second in the nation in a field of 180 schools.

  • Questions about legal system

A recent Optic article has left me with questions. It concerns a local mother and her 2-year-old and 8-month-old children who were separated from her while traveling from Portugal. She has been detained in Tennessee and her children were taken from the safety of their mother in what appears a very unprofessional and scary manner.

  • Understanding why mother ran

As a father, I understand completely why Rebecca Montoya had to flee to protect her children. As a parent if you don’t protect your children, who will? In my opinion, custody should have never been granted to Tomas Lucero just because he is a state police officer.

  • Walmart should be responsible

I am glad to see the city take the realistic step of canceling the fireworks show this year, due to fire danger.

And I’m glad to hear (second hand) that Walmart is ceasing its sale of fireworks, as of Thursday. Better late than never!

I hope all Las Vegans, even those who consider themselves careful and responsible, will save their fireworks for next year — hoping next year is not such tinderbox conditions for accidental fires.

  • St. Isidore and prayer

I recall growing up where culture, traditions and faith worked hand in hand. Most of the people in the Mora Valley back in the ‘30s and ‘40s made their living off their crops.
They had what they called the dry years, and the wet years. During the dry years people would take the statue of St. Isidore and parade him through the fields and the people would be blessed with rain.

  • Mil Gracias

On behalf of the volunteers and board members of the Comedor de San Pascual, I would like to thank the community for its support of our efforts to offer a free evening meal at the Senior Center in Old Town.
