  • Tired of fees, city’s antics

I have not written to you in a long while but I’ve been reading about what is going on Las Vegas. Our city officials are out of hand. I am not saying that it is all, but a few. I will say that the current Mayor Ortiz has hurt the people living in Las Vegas the most. He has increased everything he gets a hold of.
One example is the increase in trash pick up, the city is supposed to pick up our trash once a week but there are times that they do not but we still get charged the same.

  • Mil Gracias

I would like to thank everyone for their prayers, support, and love during my battle with cancer. I was diagnosed with throat cancer back in late October and began undergoing radiation treatment immediately. Unfortunately the cancer came back and now I am undergoing chemotherapy. My insurance has only covered a portion of all my medical costs.

  • No magic to reading

In your Aug. 1 article titled “The magic of reading” you wrote that you thought you were dyslexic because you read words backwards when you were a kid. If in fact you are dyslexic you compensated well enough to become the editor and publisher of the Optic. A substantial achievement for anyone dyslexic or not. But let me make some clarifications about dyslexia.

  • Equal, with minds of our own

I read the rebuttal to Tom McDonald’s July 4 editorial. I personally feel that Mr. McDonald runs a good newspaper, and that he is very fair. Mr. McDonald has the same right as all of us to express our freedom of speech. He only writes what is his opinion, and what he thinks.

  • This is still a great nation

  • U.S. loves and proliferates war

The good old U.S.A. loves war. It proliferates war. It has always loved war. It loves killing, maiming, injuring, and incapacitating human beings, including it’s own citizens. This government loves war.

  • A new online addiction

Over the last couple of weeks I have to confess that I’ve developed a serious addiction.

I used to be someone who wakes up in the morning to check the daily news headlines and have a bowl of cereal. But lately, I have to indulge this addiction first. In fact, I indulge almost any moment I can steal away from work or anything else I happen to be doing at the time.

In my defense, I don’t think this is a terribly bad addiction. Except of course, that this new addiction simply adds to a prior addiction I already had.

  • Concerned about lack of incinerator

It bothers me to learn that there isn’t any money to build a new incinerator to dispose of dead animals. Seems to me that those who respect humane treatment of animals (dead or alive) would  also be concerned.

I would encourage the city to aggressively request and seek funding for this project.  I appreciate Councilwoman Tonita Gurule-Giron’s concern and hope others will  also express their thoughts.  Quality of life does not only apply to humans, and a community that doesn’t  accommodate the needs of all creatures

  • Mil Gracias

We the coaches of the Las Vegas Little League 10-11 year old boys All Star team would like to thank the following businesses who contributed monetary donations for our travel expenses to the district tournament in Taos.

  • Wrestlers say thanks for support

Three Las Vegas high school wrestlers were selected as members of the Northern New Mexico Select Team that recently traveled to Orlando, Fla., to participate in the “Disney Duals.” Wrestlers Michael Pierce, Dominic Yara and Dominic Lucero spent five days wrestling up to 12 matches against other states’ best wrestlers. The experience was invaluable as each wrestler prepares for the upcoming wrestling season.
