  • A rebuttal to July 4 editorial

On Monday, July 4, Tom McDonald wrote an editorial in the Las Vegas Optic entitled “The Better Side of the U.S.A.” He wrote it from that angle. There is a downside to the U.S.A., the “Declaration of Independence” and the Constitution. Both documents were written by ruthless, racist, sexist, property-owning, slave-owning, colonizing, annihilating, white men.

  • Dumb, dumber development

What’s the opposite of smart growth? Dumb development. And Las Vegas got yet more of it (recently). Workers chopped down several mature piñon trees on a peripheral New Mexico Highlands University parking lot.

  • Response to detainee needs bodes well

Congratulations to the San Miguel Detention Center for having earned accreditation of its health services by meeting all the standards for detainees’ health care. What a tribute to the efforts of the administrator and the staff in providing these services and this level of concern!

I am proud of being part of a community that recognizes its responsibility to all its members, regardless of their circumstances, and responds to the needs of our fellow human beings.

  • Why don’t we tax wealth?

Whatever happened to fairness? Isn’t looking out for your friends and neighbors a traditional American value? Why don’t we ask the wealthy individuals and big corporations to pay more tax so that essential services to the poor and vulnerable are not cut?

  • Mil Gracias

On behalf of the Mariachi Cardenal Infantil Group, we would like to express our thanks to the community for their support. The group attended the Mariachi Spectacular conference in Albuquerque last week and had the opportunity to showcase their talents against groups from around the United States and Mexico.

  • Our Jewish ancestry

This letter is in response to conversation in the community, as well as the article in the Optic describing the vandalism in our local cemetery. There have been many who are attempting to make a connection between Reies Lopez Tijerina and his “followers” to the vandalism.

  • Keys to the city for convicted felons

Stopped at the Plaza Park to see what all the gathering of people and dignitaries was all about. Found out the mayor was proclaiming the day Reies Lopez Tijerina Day and was giving him the keys to the city. What?

I remember the ‘60s and the ‘70s. All the protests in the South led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I admired his fight for civil rights. I remember too Mr. Cesar Chavez fighting for the farmworkers’ rights. I greatly admired their courage to accomplish their goals by means of nonviolence.

  • Bills, recycling and ‘potty’ water

In the last six years my water bill has gone up $15. I use less than 2,000 gallons, the minimum amount of water, and I don’t use city natural gas. Contrary to popular belief we live in a rather poor community, with working poor, disabled and seniors on limited and/or fixed incomes, and to impose trash bills combined with land taxes, I think is prejudicial. Please find other ways to collect on unpaid trash bills!

  • Signalization not the way to go

Traffic lights are not only expensive to install, they are a significant source of accidents to motorists and pedestrians. A modern signal can cost taxpayers between $80,000 and $100,000 to install. Plus the cost of the electrical power to operate a signalized intersection 24 hours a day, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation, is now averaging about $1,400 per year.

  • Don’t close the Mora pool

It has come to my attention that administration and the School Board at the Mora Independent Schools is talking about closing the swimming pool and making it into a bus garage. In my opinion, this is the worst mistake anyone can make, and the community should protest.

The swimming pool is the only form of recreation that is available for the children in the community. It’s because of the children that the Mora Independent Schools gets funding.
