  • Congratulations to Bustos, Chavez

Congratulations, Vera Bustos! I have been an admirer of this girl’s accomplishments all through her high school and college years. She is a determined hard-working scholar star and she has now found the rainbow with a contract to play professional league in Greece with a round-trip airfare and fully furnished apartment paid by her team. How exciting is that? I am very proud of you and wish you many more blessings. When you can, let us know by way of the Las Vegas Optic how you are doing, OK?

  • Good service after hours

My wife and I attended the recent Team Cutter/Hot Vegas Nights car show and had a mechanical problem with our show car. Having limited tools and resources, we expected a long expensive tow home.

  • Use of money inappropriate

The use of federal monies allegedly intended to offer training and technical assistance to the West Las Vegas Head Start program was inappropriately used by the WLV school board members and staff. In this current economic climate, the information obtained in Las Vegas (Nevada) could have been easily obtained over the Internet and it (information) is more than likely included in the federal specifications for the use of Head Start monies.

  • ‘Doomsday’ no, planning yes

“Planning for Doomsday” is not a solution for Las Vegas. We need a special meeting and take on the various real solutions (pick one) and do it, such as: Milliken Ranch, hydro dam, coffer dam to collect street runoff, another watershed, North Dakota Missouri River to El Paso pipeline, etc. We can do it.

And while we’re at it, determine what size we want for Las Vegas. Right now it looks like “they” want to shrink the city. I too like it a small town, but too small? And no tax base?

  • Inalienable rights to freedom

Four years ago, here in Mora County, we were “awakened” by the sound of greed lapping at our doorsteps. “Land men” came to our peaceful, pristine, agricultural community seeking mineral leases to drill for oil and natural gas.

  • Spending can take your breath away

Congratulations on digging up the information on the West Las Vegas trip to the Sin City. Government spending takes your breath away sometimes.

This is further proof that newspapers are desperately needed.

  • Story on poll came up short

I certainly agree with the sentiments reported in the admittedly “unscientific” poll taken at the People’s Faire (story Aug. 29, “Poll: Locals favor military cuts”), about cutting the military budget and waste.

  • Cheney’s torture illegal and immoral

On Tuesday the memoir of former Vice President Dick Cheney was released. He continues to support the harsh interrogation methods used under the Bush government, including waterboarding, sleep deprivation, long-term isolation, stress positions, and extremes of heat and cold. He will be interviewed on every major television station and will claim that the techniques saved lives, and that no other methods would have produced the same results.

  • Mil Gracias

On behalf of the board and the children of La Plaza Little League, we would like to thanks the following sponsors for their continued support, and dedication to the community.

First of all God as the season (dedicated to Fabian Trujillo and Joey Portillo) went on without any major incidents or accidents!
