  • Equal, with minds of our own

I read the rebuttal to Tom McDonald’s July 4 editorial. I personally feel that Mr. McDonald runs a good newspaper, and that he is very fair. Mr. McDonald has the same right as all of us to express our freedom of speech. He only writes what is his opinion, and what he thinks.

  • This is still a great nation

  • U.S. loves and proliferates war

The good old U.S.A. loves war. It proliferates war. It has always loved war. It loves killing, maiming, injuring, and incapacitating human beings, including it’s own citizens. This government loves war.

  • A new online addiction

Over the last couple of weeks I have to confess that I’ve developed a serious addiction.

I used to be someone who wakes up in the morning to check the daily news headlines and have a bowl of cereal. But lately, I have to indulge this addiction first. In fact, I indulge almost any moment I can steal away from work or anything else I happen to be doing at the time.

In my defense, I don’t think this is a terribly bad addiction. Except of course, that this new addiction simply adds to a prior addiction I already had.

  • Concerned about lack of incinerator

It bothers me to learn that there isn’t any money to build a new incinerator to dispose of dead animals. Seems to me that those who respect humane treatment of animals (dead or alive) would  also be concerned.

I would encourage the city to aggressively request and seek funding for this project.  I appreciate Councilwoman Tonita Gurule-Giron’s concern and hope others will  also express their thoughts.  Quality of life does not only apply to humans, and a community that doesn’t  accommodate the needs of all creatures

  • Mil Gracias

We the coaches of the Las Vegas Little League 10-11 year old boys All Star team would like to thank the following businesses who contributed monetary donations for our travel expenses to the district tournament in Taos.

  • Wrestlers say thanks for support

Three Las Vegas high school wrestlers were selected as members of the Northern New Mexico Select Team that recently traveled to Orlando, Fla., to participate in the “Disney Duals.” Wrestlers Michael Pierce, Dominic Yara and Dominic Lucero spent five days wrestling up to 12 matches against other states’ best wrestlers. The experience was invaluable as each wrestler prepares for the upcoming wrestling season.

  • Letter to editor was a racist rant

I’m surprised the Optic printed “A rebuttal to July 4 editorial” — such a racist rant.

So, Las Vegas is poor because the wealth of privileged white people hasn’t trickled down to their victims here, huh?

Of course, being born white is a guarantee of wealth and privilege.
Not quite. My father’s people were Scottish immigrant dirt farmers who lost everything in the Nebraska Dust Bowl. And yet, the family’s four children all worked their way through college and became successful.

  • Do the right thing for the veterans

On July 1, San Miguel County stopped operating the veterans van. The van provided transportation for veterans with no other way to get to the V.A. Hospital in Albuquerque for medical treatment. The reason given for this action was “ the county was losing money.”

  • Desecration was likely a hate crime

Having been away most of the summer, I was unaware of the desecration of grave markers at the Montefiore Jewish Cemetery and, to a lesser extent, at the adjoining Masonic Cemetery.  After learning about these acts, I visited the cemeteries to see for myself and saw a large number of markers toppled from their bases and in one case, most disturbingly,  a monument with a Jewish star which had been smashed.
