As I celebrated my birthday, I was thankful for another year of life. I would also like to thank everyone in Mora and San Miguel counties who have made a difference in my life. I look back, and one incident stands out in my mind.

One year the Mora Fiesta Committeee had a “dunking booth.” I felt that if I volunteered to get  dunked I would make a lot of money for the county. I never learned how to swim, so after the first dunk, I felt I was going to drown, so there went that idea.

A dove and the word peace were featured in full color on the cover of our church program on a recent Sunday. It was the time of year when we celebrate the birth of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. We remember that he said, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.”

Fire has a way of casting a light on the true nature of people.  Over the past week, those of us in the Sapello-Rociada Volunteer Fire Department’s district saw the courage and caring of many people, not only in our district but throughout San Miguel and Mora counties. Two separate fires, the La Canada wildland fire and the Apodaca residence fire, were beyond the capacity of our fire department.  What’s more, high winds destroyed our radio repeater not once but twice — both times almost simultaneously with the threat of fire.

Somebody should explain to the Republicans that “multimillion” and “billion” are not what is meant by small business. Republicans would cut wasteful spending. Let’s stop supporting our communities, educating our children. Let’s stop feeding the hungry. Too many of us are not millionaires. It seems absurd to subsidize the rich. Let us not dish out any money to people who receive Social Security.
