  • Photo work has been fun

    Photographing and designing a weekly photo page for the Las Vegas Optic for the summer has been a pleasure. I was able to meet many locals and event-goers from all over town, work under deadlines in a busy press environment and improve my own skills as a photographer.

  • Mil Gracias - August 13, 2012

    You have guardian angels living in your community, Las Vegas!

    Unfortunately, I encountered a deer with my truck, on Highway 104 one evening recently. Fortunately my passenger and I were not hurt. I want to personally thank Joseph and Sonia, the good Samaritans who stopped to help, and stayed with us for several hours and helped clean up the debris from the roadside; they were so kind!

    Also, my hat is off to deputies Bernal and Nelson, for their professionalism, support and assistance with the paperwork.

  • Caring more, not less

    Frank Splendora recently objected, in a letter to the Optic, to Amnesty International’s position regarding prolonged solitary confinement in U.S. prisons, a practice which too frequently descends into a form of torture. Mr. Splendora seems to feel that AI’s position leads to coddling prisoners.

  • Extremes are nonproductive

    We have read your published letters from Carrol Pearson and Frank Splendoria about solitary confinement. Mr. Splendoria mentioned the recent murders in Aurora, Colo., by one James Holmes. These were probably far worse than the Columbine murders some years ago. These things certainly ought not to be.

  • Wannabe kisser sincere in efforts

    It  seems as though the campaign to win the right to Kiss That Pig is heating up. This is a good thing for as I mentioned in my letter last week my motto is, “Remember, no matter who puckers for that pig, Samaritan House wins!”

    Instead of making empty promises and pretending to enjoy kissing that pig, as my opponent Tom McDonald has mentioned, I am actually out there pounding the pavement and doing the job of true fundraising.

  • Pig caller endorses Krall

    I have been reading with interest, the preparation for kissing the pig.

    I was born in Nebraska (a state not a stranger to pigs), but have lived extensively on farms in Iowa and Arkansas. I believe this leaves me qualified to weigh in on the important matter of the pig kissing contest.

    My jobs on the farms were always caring for all livestock. In Arkansas, I used to ride a horse to free range with our cattle and goats grazed and hogs (both wild and tame) abounded, returning our livestock to the farm.

  • Suggestions for emergencies

    I recently had a medical emergency at my house and I’ll have to admit that, despite living in the country, the response time was fair.

    I know we have good EMTs on board right now, but Mora County is pretty spread out, and there is always room for improvement.

    I know I’m not in office anymore, but what happens in Mora County has a big effect on me and all the citizens. I have a few suggestions that could very well help to save lives.
