  • The idolatry of sports programs

This is a sad day! Joe Paterno, “JoePa,” has died after a brilliant career, but under a cloud of scandal at the end. The greater tragedy, however, is that he and several others were willing to sacrifice young boys on the altar of the Penn State football program.

God have mercy on us all for the sin of idolatry we have committed with our school and professional sports programs.

  • Acupuncture needs to be included

In 2010, President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act, a health insurance reform law intended to ensure access to quality and affordable health insurance for all Americans. Starting in 2014, most health plans will be required to offer a comprehensive package of items and services to patients, known as “essential health benefits,” or EHB.

Under the new law, EHB must cover certain specific services including emergency services, maternity and newborn care, prescription drugs as well as preventive and wellness services, among others.

  • A tremendous influence

I graduated from New Mexico Highlands University in 1970. I was a physics and mathematics major. Many people at Highlands had significant influences on my career and life, which has turned out quite successfully, but none were more important to me than Dr. Kim Kirkpatrick.

  • Education is the reason for schools

When a few experts get together and develop a possible plan for a new unified school district, things might move beyond the talking stage.

  • Water comes before economy

    To the mayor and councilors:

Let me point out some realities. Most if not all of you know these realities already — so, in part, I may be speaking to those who wish to occupy your seats after next month. I hope they take note.

  • Correction

In last Friday’s Optic, the wrong “signature” followed the letter headlined “Guantanamo and its legacy.”

Judy Bennett of Rociada, not Judy Smith, wrote the letter.

  • Work out the differences

I’m sorry to hear that the residents of Chacon in Mora County, are having problems with La Jicarita Telephone Co. It has been my experience over the years that La Jicarita is very professional when it comes to business and I’m sure they will find another place to put the cell towers and other equipment necessary to give the people of Chacon better service.

  • Who should, shouldn’t lead

Looks like the city charter will be put to the challenge. With so many running, it is bound to be a runoff. The candidates’ reasons for running are varied and say a lot about them.

  • Guantanamo and its legacy

I appreciated Robert Pearson’s letter to the Optic of Jan. 13, which highlighted the legal quagmire at the Guantanamo Detention facility.

U.S. citizens should be very concerned that our country has acquired some of the undesirable characteristics of military dictatorships. Our constitution insists on innocence until proven guilty, speedy and fair trials according to established rules of due process, and respect for the human rights of everyone, including prisoners, even when proven guilty.
