Thank you to the Bank of Las Vegas and Community First Bank for their beautiful landscape improvements on Douglas Avenue. Paying the full cost of the improvements, the banks have illustrated their faith in the community, their creativity and ability to work together for the betterment of the entire city.

This project will bolster the business corridor on Douglas by bringing a pleasant atmosphere to that portion of our town. Hopefully, their example will inspire others in the community to add beautification projects in the historic district as well as elsewhere in the city.

I read with concern about the plan of the Las Vegas City School Board to improve student performance at struggling schools in the district. The idea, as presented in the Optic, seems to be this. Students at Paul D. Henry are performing well. That means that the teachers at Paul D. Henry must be doing a good job. So the obvious conclusion is that if we move those good teachers to other schools, the performance of the students at the other schools will improve.

It has come to the attention of the Paul D. Henry Elementary School staff that reorganization or movement of teachers will be happening for next year. We feel that due to PDH meeting adequate yearly progress for the last two years that it is a possibility our teachers may be moved to different schools that have not made AYP. It is to our understanding that the strongest teachers will be moved to service the students most in need.

On behalf of la Fiesta de la Hispanidad, I wish to thank all the participants who performed last March 26 in Ilfeld Auditorium at the 17th annual Fiesta de la Hispanidad. Each of you was an individual success, and I am deeply appreciative of you, your talent, and the hours spent in practicing for the time spent on stage. Your spirit of volunteerism and good will is what shapes and characterizes the soul of this event.
