We read Diego Quintana’s April 14 letter to the editor, “Coop trying to hijack trustee election” with disappointment and disbelief. Quintana’s letter is factually incorrect and misrepresents the board’s actions regarding the May 10 District 4 meeting and election.    

In an endeavor to help the victims of the tsunami and earthquakes in Japan, members of the First United Methodist Church planned a cultural learning evening to teach Japanese crafts and art and share in Japanese dinner. The evening was a gratifying success.

From donations, ticket sales, and the silent auction, as well as bake sale and raffle from the United World College, a check for $3,500 will go to UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief). Since there are no administrative fees for the committee, the people in need will receive 100 percent of the donation.

OK! The Las Vegas City Schools district is raising our property taxes 30 percent because of their error; our mayor wants to raise our water taxes 500 percent, supposedly over the next 20 years. Please, correct me if I am wrong. If you’re an educator, the legislature just increased the amount of your retirement contribution, meaning less take-home pay (during) a recession with gas and food prices going up and up; just to name a couple of examples of cost-of-living increases.

Referring to the front page article on April 4-5, I believe that taking United World College international students on a spring break field trip to pick up litter along the U.S./Mexico border in the Sonoran Desert was naïve and irresponsible on the part of those arranging and approving such a trip.

Those students could have surprised “immigrants” who were crossing with drugs, weapons, etc., resulting in a tragedy of terrible proportions and repercussions not only for UWC, but internationally.
