I am writing to commend Sens. Bingaman and Udall for their leadership in bringing Rio Grande del Norte National Conservation Area Establishing Act one step closer to passage with a hearing last week in the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee’s Subcommittee on Public Lands and Forests.

It has been said that we wait until people die before we say good things about them, but when Leonard Aragon retired from Mora Independent Schools I sent in a nice article to the Optic, describing his character, and it was published.

Give me a break! A welcoming gateway arch at University Avenue and Fifth Street? That’s akin to putting a pearl necklace on a pig! It will take a lot more than $100,000 in landscaping, banners and informational signs to mask the unsightly convenience store, used car lot, discount gas station and vacant lot at that intersection!

Of course the conceptual drawings look beautiful. The architect wouldn’t get paid if they didn’t look good! It’s a far cry from an artist’s rendering to what will probably be built.

When are the good citizens of this great city going to say enough is enough, and take a stand against politics as usual?

The East Las Vegas School Board just gave us another prime example at its school board meeting.

The rumor-mill had this decision made three weeks ago, and damn if it wasn’t right. Makes you wonder how often school board members are meeting and discussing these issues outside regular board meetings.
