When I first read Mr. (Reies) Tijerina’s remark in the June 10 Optic about “the Jews who made bombs that could destroy humanity,” I was appalled that the well-spoken, politically astute advocate for the Chicano movement, could make such a blatantly ignorant, if not hateful, comment, seemingly oblivious to the entire context of World War II and the fact that Germany, among others, were also trying to develop a bomb.  

In December 2009, I wrote up a proposal that was to be shared with the Economic Development Corporation and the Chamber of Commerce. The purpose of the proposal was to come up with ideas for what could be done to increase the economic development of Las Vegas and the surrounding area. I never did hear anything about the proposal after I gave it to the Chamber.

I would like to share a brief overview of that proposal with you now.  

Ideas to further conserve water:

• One can catch handwashing water from a cut used gallon water jug set in the sink.

• Wash dishes by hand to collect rinse dish water (don't use garbage disposers).

• Collect tub water using a gallon jug as a scoop.

• Wash clothes by hand and use leftover water to flush the toilet, and or water plants outside or save for future use in a five gallon used clean paint jug.

A recent Optic article has left me with questions. It concerns a local mother and her 2-year-old and 8-month-old children who were separated from her while traveling from Portugal. She has been detained in Tennessee and her children were taken from the safety of their mother in what appears a very unprofessional and scary manner.
