  • Not a class act

On Tuesday, April 8, the San Miguel County Commission held its monthly meeting. The room was packed. The main item on the agenda was the vote to be taken regarding a two-year extension of the fracking moratorium now in place, the same two-year extension that had just been recommended by the Planning and Zoning Commission.

  • Protect the land from drilling

In regards to Mr. (Jacobo) Pacheco’s recent letter, I couldn’t agree more with his stand to save what little is left of our land and water, not only in Mora County, but all of northern New Mexico.

  • Politicians should follow beliefs

On Palm Sunday we heard the about the traitor Judas, and how he betrayed Jesus. We were also told of Pontius Pilate “washing his hands” of Christ’s Crucifixion.

It reminds me of those so-called Catholic politicians (you know who they are), who say they do not support abortion because they will not impose their beliefs on others. They wring and wash their hands as Pilate did. But what of the millions of wasted little ones they choose to ignore?

  • Label genetically modified food

Recently, Kroger and Safeway both announced that they will not sell genetically engineered salmon in their stores. The fish in question have had their DNA altered so that they grow twice as fast. These announcements were preemptive, as the Food and Drug Administration has not even approved these salmon for market.

  • Protect our special places

New Mexico, the Land of Enchantment, is full of beauty; from the wildlife it has to the people that live in it. Despite this allurement, oil and gas companies are already fracking within New Mexico, and now they have their eyes set on fracking outside precious national parks like Chaco Canyon.

  • Stop neglecting your vehicle

Many vehicles were neglected during the recent brutal winter months and could use a little extra care by now. The Car Care Council recommends that motorists follow three simple steps during National Car Care Month in April to get vehicles ready for the spring and summer driving season.

Keep your vehicle clean. Regular car washes and waxes protect the paint and body of your car from corrosive debris. In parts of the country where salt is used on the roads, regularly washing is especially important.

  • Writer supports L’Esperance

Those of us who have signed this letter endorse and are asking our friends and neighbors in Ward 1 to vote for Oliver L’Esperance for city councilor. We believe Mr. L’Esperance is the kind of councilor we need, one who will listen to average families’ interests and who will work constructively with his colleagues in city government.

  • Compliments on another great event

On Friday, March 28, La Fiesta de la Hispanidad celebrated its 20th anniversary. We would like to compliment Sara Harris, organizer and emcee, for her dedication to this event that takes place every year.

Once again she set the tone for another wonderful performance, which was well attended. Our community is fortunate to have a person like Sara to organize this event and find volunteers to donate their time for this wonderful event.

  • Co-op members deserve the truth

The members of the Mora-San Miguel Electric Cooperative need to know what is really happening within the “People’s Co-op.”

I have worked with three different board trustee chairmen and am appalled by the way the meetings are being run. The electric cooperative board is to follow Roberts Rules of Order, and this was not happening to the full extent. The chairman was not acknowledging other board members’ motions or expressed concerns.

  • California student seeks information

My name is Gabriela Magaña. I am a fifth grader at Napa Valley Language Academy in Napa, Calif.

The reason I am writing is that my class is doing state reports and I have chosen your magnificent state of New Mexico. I would really like it if you posted my letter in your newspaper so that I may get the help I need for my report. What I need from you or your readers are pamphlets, postcards, souvenirs or anything else that would be useful.
