Tax hike should have gone to voters
I read your “Spend It Wisely” editorial this morning, and it has me a bit upset. We are going to be forced to pay a higher taxes that we are not allowed to vote on? Since when do the people not have the right to vote on whether or not our taxes are increased?

In addition to paying more taxes, it says the moneys are going to be spent on road repairs. This would be fine if the county was doing the job correctly.

    The Statue of Liberty
Editor’s note: The following remarks were made during last week’s City Council meeting and are being reprinted here as a letter to the editor with the writer’s permission.
    Mr. Mayor, Councilors –
You’ve been working our water problems well, please maintain the focus. But today, another topic.

    School Priorities
“Wouldn’t it be nice if schools allocated their budgets first to the classroom, and then what’s left to administration? Teachers could be given good salaries, good enough to attract and keep the best.
Classrooms could be supplied with the best books, materials, and supplies. Students could graduate with the knowledge and skills necessary to land a good job (somewhere) and have enough to support themselves and a future family.

    U.S. must condemn both sides
I was horrified to learn that Secretary of State John Kerry has declared actions of the Israeli government in Gaza are “legitimate and appropriate.” The targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure is never ever either “legitimate” or “appropriate”.

No shame in standing up for beliefs
There should be an inalienable understanding that the “Fiestas” are in celebration of our people, our talents, our accomplishments. It is fitting that our Vegas All Stars, Little Leaguers, veterans, school clubs, civic organizations, Fiesta royalty and our nearby communities be celebrated.
Our attention should not be diverted from the greatness of community by an undeserved slap in our faces by Alfonso Ortiz’s poor judgment again.

    Gov is improving education
My name is Sarah Vasquez. I live up in the beautiful mountains of Chacon, N.M., with my husband, Ruben. He is retired, and is now enjoying those choices that we all look forward to one day be able to make in our daily lives.
I, on the other hand, still work and drive approximately 54 miles each way to and from my job in another beautiful spot in our state, Angel Fire. I work in Property Management in a great place, Angel Fire Resort. I have been there since 2000.
