• Fond memories of skating pond

I was born and raised in Las Vegas, and although I am an old man now, I still have crystal clear recollections of my childhood which come flooding back to me this time of year.

I can remember the ice skating pond up in Montezuma and my grandmother driving me up there every afternoon after school so I could practice my figures and skate with my friends. Oh, the crisp air with a trace of fireplace smoke in the distance, and the excitement of just being there during the holidays! Out of all my childhood memories, I cherish this one the most.

  • Vasectomies may be the solution

I believe a reasonable alternative to Mr. (Frank) Splendoria’s concerns (about abortion) is to mandate vasectomies for all men by age 35.

  • Remember elderly this time of year

The holidays are upon us, which can be a challenging time for residents of long-term care facilities, as well as their families. Two questions are often asked by families: Can I bring my loved one home overnight, or to a special family or religious celebration, and what can I do to ensure a successful visit that doesn’t feel awkward?

  • Another reason to shop local

Here is yet one more reason to support locally owned, locally operated businesses in our community. What happened to me last week would never have happened at a big box store.

I went to Art Essentials at 1001 Eight Street to buy some supplies for making gifts for the holidays. Stephanie, the owner, was very helpful. She willingly shared her extensive expertise. I left the store feeling much more creative than when I entered. I was excited to begin making my gifts for Christmas.

  • Our Lady of Guadalupe

There are over one billion Catholics, and the Catholic Church has designated Dec. 12, as the day to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. So those who are not aware of the story, I will gladly retell it.

  • Abortion debate rages on

I’m sorry, Mr. Marshall Poole, but I still disagree with you. I’m just one person, but you take great offense not only to my personal beliefs, but also my right to express them. I think I understand why, but more on that later.

Have I been put on the Progressive Blacklist for not kowtowing to your beliefs, and have you been assigned to take me out? Sure seems like your mission is to smear me and then expect that I’ll wither and quietly crawl into a corner never to challenge Progressive nonsense again.

  • Chinese prisoner thanks supporters

For the last seven years our local Amnesty International group has petitioned Chinese government officials on behalf of prisoner of conscience Shi Tao, a journalist and poet who was sentenced to 10 years in prison for an e-mail he sent in 2004. During that time many members of our community have generously participated in our campaign by signing petitions, writing to government officials and sending letters of support and encouragement to Shi Tao himself in prison.

  • Help support ‘Christmas for kids’

Every Christmas, Rough Rider Motorcycle Rally, Inc. fundraises and sponsors Christmas presents for local children associated with organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern New Mexico and Ride to Pride. Presents include items such as coats, shoes, clothing, books, school supplies and a toy for each child.  The gifts are distributed by Santa at an annual Christmas party.

  • Convinced Oswald didn’t act alone

Six of us in three canoes were paddling tandem on a whitewater river, the Yampa, which is a tributary of the Colorado. My canoe partner, Fred, was one of the best I’ve ever had. We read the river the same way and anticipated each other’s moves.

  • Drilling is bad for the environment

Hello, fellow Mora and San Miguel residents. More than 40 percent of all methane (a gas that contributes to global warming) being released to the air we breathe here in the U.S. is created by Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas (EPA). Although not yet determined, it is being assumed the primary culprit in Texas and Oklahoma is the oil and gas industry (ergo, fracking) and dairies in Kansas.
