First let me congratulate Mayor Alfonso Ortiz and councilors Joey Herrera and Vince Howell. These three elected officials are truly by and for the people. Las Vegas is finally in tune with the rest of the country that is moving forward and no matter what we the citizens have to say.

In his letter published Sept. 28, Frank Splendoria says the need for personal responsibility and self-reliance has been supplanted by governmental “oversight and control” and this somehow threatens our faith in God. Personal responsibility has always been and remains the foundation of this or any civilization. It is our responsibility to provide for our families yet it is also our responsibility to act in ways that will not harm others. It is our responsibility to care for those around us and it is our responsibility to leave nature unharmed.

We all have our pet “issues” which we hope will be addressed in the upcoming presidential debates. For me, the overriding issue I hope to see discussed is the strange and disturbing trend whereby a moderate, hardworking president is somehow transformed into a socialist, Muslim, America-destroying demon.

President Obama has had four years to address and illuminate this alarming process — given all the opportunities — and I fault him for not having done so.

There is a waft in the air. It is called politics!

Having decided a few years ago to try to do something about the quality of leaders we are sending to Washington, I became a campaign volunteer. I have learned some things along the way. For some four years now, at the local, state and national levels, people are disillusioned (to say the least) with how politics and the selection process is so heavily dependent on money, money, money.
