Comcast Cares Day was held last Saturday at the First Born of Northern New Mexico office at 1900B Hot Springs Blvd.

We had 26 people participate in Comcast Cares Day, which seems small compared to the 70,000 people worldwide who were doing Comcast Day, but to us it was very important. Our facility got all the woodwork painted in the building plus the kitchen. Carpeting was shampooed and a new front door was donated and installed. The final upgrade was window flower boxes on our porch, which are beautiful.

As a property owner in Mora County, I would like to commend our County Commissioners John Olivas and Alfonso Griego for standing up for the citizens of Mora County on April 29 by passing the community water rights and local self-government ordinance. They have taken a huge step showing their courage, integrity, and commitment to protect our water and our general welfare from damaging corporate interests.

We are faced with the threat of natural gas companies wanting to exploit our resources. The environmental impacts from gas fracking are devastating. Such as:

First let me say that I’m really sorry to hear that the Head Start program is being cut in funding. In my younger days I was social services coordinator for the Head Start program in Cheyenne, Wyo. I was elected vice chair for Region 8 in Denver, Colo., and president of the Wyoming Head Start Staff Association for the whole state of Wyoming.

This program is one of the most important, serving children from low-income homes, and it not only helps the child get a good head start in life, it benefits the whole family.

Just like with fracking, some years ago there was a similar hue and cry about the Forest Service’s thinning of the upper Gallinas Watershed. Then, like now with oil and gas development, the fear-mongers will be proven wrong.
