The Samaritan House is one of our better community organizations. It reflects one of the best characteristics of Las Vegas — our willingness to share with and help those who are down on their luck.

Board member Rosie Lopez recently filled me in on the four major programs that make up the Samaritan House’s mission. They are:

• Food distribution, which takes place on the second Wednesday of each month at the main office at 220 Bernalillo St.

OSLO, NORWAY — A 1969 romantic comedy with almost the same title as this headline (should be Tuesday instead of Wednesday), humorously depicts the whirlwind nature of European travel itineraries.

Never having been this far north, we opted to tack on an Atlantic coast week of travel to our customary two weeks in Denmark, where we visit our son Stanley Adam and his family, in July.

In June 1926, exactly three years after his celebrated trial for criminal libel, Carl Magee again stood trial in Las Vegas, for killing John Lassetter in the lobby of the Meadows (El Fidel) Hotel 10 months earlier.

There’s so much that can be said about the state of our schools in Las Vegas. Controversy surrounds them at every turn. The recent school grades, the four-day school week, consolidation — seems there’s always something to wring our hands over when it comes to preparing our children for the future.
