While it was a relatively quiet time for America and its 47th state, the global war in Europe had begun in July of 1914. The U.S. was following a policy of non-intervention and attempting to broker peace when, in May of 1915, the British Liner Lusitania was sunk by a German U-Boat. There were 128 Americans among the dead, and the threat of America’s entry into the Great War loomed.
