  • N.M. Rep. Tomás Salazar selected for academy

    The Council of State Governments West, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization serving Western state legislators of both parties in 13 Western states, has selected New Mexico State Rep. Tomas E. Salazar as a participant in its training institute for lawmakers in their first four years of service.

    The purpose of the Western Legislative Academy is to build excellence and effectiveness in state legislators in the Western region.

  • Man’s standoff with police ends peacefully

    A several-hour standoff between the Las Vegas Police Department and an armed man holed up in his Fifth Street home ended peacefully with the man surrendering to police early Wednesday.

    As a result of the standoff Aaron Martinez, 29, now faces several charges stemming from the incident that started as a domestic disturbance. Martinez is now facing a charge for criminal damage to property of a household member, a fourth degree felony, and a negligent use of a deadly weapon under the influence of an intoxicant or narcotic charge, a petty misdemeanor.

  • Alleged teen killer may face adult sanctions

    The 16-year old boy charged in July with fatally stabbing his mother’s boyfriend could face adult sanctions in the case if he’s found guilty of the crime.
    The District Attorney’s office has filed a notice of intent to seek adult sanctions against Fabian Maes, who was 15 at the time of the incident.

  • National honor for Mora High School

    Mora High School has been named a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. The awards were announced on Tuesday and include Mora High School, Newcomb Elementary, and Melrose Elementary School. The list contains 335 schools throughout the country.
    According to a press release from Sens. Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich, Mora High School and Melrose Elementary School were selected for their progress in tightening up achievement gaps while Newcomb Elementary, located in the northwestern part of the state, was honored for being high-performing.

  • Balloon Fiesta takes off Saturday


    ALBUQUERQUE  — Hundreds of colorful hot air balloons of all shapes and sizes and from all over the world will be lifting off this weekend for the start of the 44th annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.

    The nine-day fiesta — one of the most photographed events in the world — will begin Saturday just after the sun rises as wave after wave of balloons take to the sky as part of the first mass ascension.
