    Briana Montaño has been named Elks Student of the Month, as announced by Elks Lodge No. 408.
    She is the daughter of Stacy and Debbie Montaño.

    A senior at West Las Vegas High School, Briana holds a 4.25 GPA and winning Elks Student of the Month as well as Rotary Club student of the month and Miss West Las Vegas.

  • HU students receive praise

    New Mexico Highlands University media arts students received praise during a portfolio review with the New Mexico chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts April 9 in Santa Fe.

    Fourteen New Mexico AIGA members reviewed the Highlands students’ work, including Fred Cisneros, principal for Cisneros Design, a full-service graphic design and branding firm in Santa Fe.

  • Mora County Notebook: Sen. Tom Udall visits Mora Valley

    Mora was included in Senator Tom Udall’s small business and Economic Development Tour  recently. He toured eight New Mexico counties in the first week of the April.

    He visited two projects in the Mora County. He visited La Jicarita Rural Telephone Cooperative and the Mora National Fish Hatchery on Tuesday as they serve as economic development engines for the community.

    La Jicarita manager Michael J.Leyba gave him and his staff a tour of the new telephone cooperative building. The new offices are now up and running serving the constituents of the area.

    I continue to find interesting and  historical writings and newspaper columns in my family's collection of stuff. My parents were great friends of Walter and Delma Vivian. Walter was the editor of the Optic in 1950, and his wife, Delma was a talented reporter for the paper.

  • Audit: Residents overcharged

    City of Las Vegas customers were overbilled a total of $355,564 on their garbage bills from January 2009 through June 30, 2010, a recently released independent audit for the city reveals.

    The city never refunded its customers’ accounts for the overcharges, and there are no plans to do so now, City Manager Timothy Dodge said.

    Dodge called the situation a procedural glitch and said that if the city were to provide refunds it would have to get the money from current customers.

  • Church to become community center

    The Old Town Mission Church will soon become a community center,  thanks to the First United Presbyterian Church and United World College-USA.

    Mayor Alfonso Ortiz, World College President Lisa Darling, Pastor Randy Campbell and others will have an official signing ceremony to recognize the collaboration between UWC and the church on May 3. The ceremony will start at 4 p.m. at the renovated church on the corner of Socorro and Chavez streets on the city’s west side.

  • Arrest made in home invasion

    A 24-year-old Las Vegas man was arrested Monday on a second-degree aggravated burglary charge after he allegedly forced himself into a residence, pointed a firearm at several people and demanded money.

    Antonio Olivarez was booked into the San Miguel County Detention Center. His bond was set at $10,000 cash by Magistrate Philip Romero.
