    NM honored for organ donations
    New Mexico has been recognized for its organ donor registration rates.
    New Mexico Donor Services says the state has been awarded a silver medal by the Virginia-based nonprofit organization Donate Life America.
    The group’s latest report card shows New Mexico had a donor designation share of 60 percent in 2011 with an estimated 945,000 people on the state’s registry.

    Friday, Sept. 14, 1962 — Items were recovered from the First Christian Church building, recently razed, at University and Eighth Street. They included a silk flag, a Bible, a brief history of the church, Booklet of proceedings of AF&AM Grand Lodge, dated October 1917, and a pamphlet containing the President’s War Message of April 2, 1917. Contents will be replaced in the present church cornerstone, at Seventh and Columbia.

  • Census: Poverty rate up in NM

    SANTA FE — More New Mexicans are living in poverty and nearly a fifth of the state’s population lacks health insurance, the Census Bureau reported Wednesday.

    The poverty rate in New Mexico was 20.2 percent in 2010-2011 compared with 18.8 percent in 2009-2010. The state’s median household income dropped during the same time.

  • Gov has 69 percent approval rating

    SANTA FE — Just days after speaking at the Republican National Convention, Gov. Susana Martinez has earned a strong approval rating among New Mexico voters.

    A poll commissioned by The Albuquerque Journal found that 69 percent of New Mexico voters approve of the Republican governor’s performance 20 months into her first term.

    Meanwhile, 17 percent of voters polled Sept. 3-6 said they disapprove of her job performance, while 14 percent were undecided, the poll found.
