  • Vegas woman places high in national fitness competition

    Stephanie Trujillo-Gonzales of Las Vegas earned a top 10 finish in the Ms. Bikini America’s Classic division and a 14th place in the fitness championship category on Nov. 19 in the Fitness America bodybuilding competition held in Las Vegas, Nev.

    Trujillo-Gonzales, 38, is a full-time registered nurse at Alta Vista Regional Hospital, a wife and mother of two. She attended West Las Vegas High and Luna Community College (then LVTI) before earning her bachelor of science in nursing from UNM in 2009.

    It is no exaggeration that Las Vegas has its fair share of community service groups. As one member of the Alta Vista Regional Hospital Volunteer Chaplains Group put it, “Everyone has different ways to serve the community. This is the way we serve.”

    One might say that this group reflects the sentiments of Emily Dickinson’s poem, “If I Can Stop One Heart from Breaking”: “If I can stop one heart from breaking/ I shall not live in vain/ If I can ease one life the aching/ Or cool one pain….I shall not live in vain.”

  • Former Highlands player jailed

    A former New Mexico Highlands University football player is facing criminal charges for allegedly taking another student’s credit card and using it at a local store.

    State Police arrested Deandre Clemons, 21, who lives in Connor Hall, last Monday. He has been charged with theft or acquiring a credit card, a fourth-degree felony, and fraudulent use of a credit card, a misdemeanor.

    ALBUQUERQUE — James Woolbert had just gotten out of jail and had been drinking with his girlfriend, family members said, when they decided to load their two young children into a vehicle without working brakes and head home.

    They never made it. Their Isuzu rolled twice, ejecting the unstrapped children and killing them and their mother.

  • Police apprehend alleged burglar

    A Las Vegas man has been charged with several felonies after he allegedly broke into a home on the 300 block of Cumbres Patio.

    Andreques “Rico” Gallegos, 19, of the 300 block of South Commerce Street, threatened to kill himself when police confronted him last Sunday, according to a probable cause statement filed by Las Vegas police Nov. 21 in San Miguel Magistrate Court. Police, however, were able to extract him from a window at the mobile home where he was staying.

    Monday, Nov. 27 — Great crowds were in attendance at the burial of Mike Buko /Saturday afternoon at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Main Street at which time Dr. Randolph of the Randolph Hypnotic troupe placed the young man under the influence of hypnotism and buried him alive... The box was boarded up with airshafts running to the surface of the ground at the foot and head to allow air to enter the grave...  The boy will be awakened from his sleep tonight at 8 o'clock at the opera house.
