  • No prison time for repeat offender

    ALBUQUERQUE — A woman has violated at least 13 probation requirements since 2009 in New Mexico yet has continued receiving suspended sentences and referrals to probation programs.

    That has an Albuquerque probation officer wondering why 25-year-old Landis Litz has slept more than 900 nights at the Metropolitan Detention Center since May 2006 but hasn’t done hard time at any state prisons.

    The Bernalillo County district attorney says it’s not her office’s fault.

  • Report faults police

    ALBUQUERQUE — Most law enforcement agencies in New Mexico aren’t in compliance with a state law intended to combat racial profiling, according to a report released Thursday by civil right groups and an immigrant advocacy organization.

    The report said less than a quarter of all agencies surveyed were in compliance with the 2009 law banning biased policing.

    The MainStreet de Las Vegas Board of Directors elected Corine Leger as its president last week. 

    Leger replaces Bill Taylor who served for two-and-a-half years and led the group in successful funding for the Downtown Action Plan, the award of $90,000 in capital outlay money to renovate the breezeway as a community space for artists, musicians, vendors and films and successful implementation of “Facade Squad,” which has painted 11 buildings with help from students and community members.

    Vegas man accused of rape

    A 24-year-old Las Vegas man was arrested last week on charges of second-degee rape, kidnapping, assault against a household member and battery against a household member.

    The alleged victim in the case is the suspect’s ex-girlfriend. State police made the arrest on the evening of July 11 after the alleged victim approached an officer and reported that she had been raped.

  • Local woman turns 105

    Rosita M. Gallegos, a native of New Mexico, turned 105 years old on June 29.  
    She celebrated the milestone with family and a few close friends on June 23.  Gallegos resides at Vida Encantada Rehab and Nursing Home.

    She has lived in Las Vegas for more than 70 years.
