    Gold and silver were mined in Las Vegas at the turn of the century, and gold is going to be at the charity golf tournament for children, this weekend at Pendaries.

    Big Brothers/Big Sisters will be giving a 24- carat gold-plated putter, at the upcoming golf tournament on Sunday in Pendaries.   
    This putter is famous and is donated by Ben and Saneh Boothe of The Boothe Companies.

  • South spikers finish well

    Marka Garcia often mesmerized volleyball opponents with her serves, and in the final moments of her final match she found a way to do it again in Tuesday’s North-South All-Star match in Las Cruces.

    The recently graduated Robertson star had an ace and accounted for three straight service points as part of a key North rally in game two.
    Still, the South had more than enough firepower to respond, and the girls in blue held on for a two-game sweep in the annual showcase of the state’s premier volleyball players.

    The Lady Cardinals youth basketball team finished the Santa Fe Summer League undefeated with an 8-0 record.  
    On July 18, the Las Vegas girls topped off the season with a 36-3 thrashing of the Santa Fe Style.

    PARK CITY, Utah  — Hans Gardner shouted as he headed down the steep ramp and slapped his thigh the way Olympic silver medalist Jeret “Speedy” Peterson often did.

    “I wanted to go out there and be as strong as I could ... while letting him motivate me,” the rookie said Wednesday, a day after learning that police said one of the world’s most innovative freestyle skiers had killed himself just miles down the road in Lambs Canyon.

    Matt Hasselbeck is heading to Music City. Santonio Holmes is staying at home in the Meadowlands. Two days after the lockout ended, NFL teams are doing deals at a frantic pace, with some big names — maybe even Donovan McNabb — changing addresses, and others staying put.

    Not going anywhere is Giants coach Tom Coughlin, who signed a one-year extension Wednesday that keeps him with the team through 2012.

  • Snow cone man charged

    When the snow cone man went a-calling, the policeman started following.

    Now the snow cone man is facing two fourth-degree felonies, and he is no longer able to sell his summertime treats. It’s all over two containers of moonshine and the special $2 snow cones police say he was selling to some of his customers.

    Pedro Lesperance, 55, of the 1300 block of Highway 283-16, has been charged with unlawful sale of alcoholic beverages, possession of alcoholic beverages for sale and a misdemeanor count of having open containers of alcohol while in a motor vehicle.
