  • Fiesta Royalty - Queen will be crowned tonight

    Later this evening either Sonia Castillo or Rebecca Trujillo will be crowned this year’s Fiesta Queen.

    The coronation takes place following the fiesta mass, which begins at 5 p.m. today (Friday) at Immaculate Conception Church. After the mass the newly crowned reina along with her princesa will make their way to Plaza Park. Joining them will be members of the fiesta oversight committee, and fiesta royalty from Santa Fe, Taos and Española. Later that evening, the Fiesta Queen’s dinner and dance will take place at El Rialto.

  • Fire danger sparks firework concerns

    The fire season has been relatively mild across the West this year, but officials in New Mexico are doing what they can to rein in the use of fireworks given the dry conditions and high fire danger plaguing both states.

    New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez has been pushing hard for cities and counties to restrict the use of fireworks with local ordinances.

    Monday, July 6 — Although there were a few familiar Democratic faces missing, more than 500 party faithful crowded into University Hall Thursday night to listen to Gov. Jack Campbell pay tribute to Apolonio Duran, chairman of the San Miguel County Democratic Central Committee, and to outline the accomplishments of the party, in the nation and state, during the past two years. There have been local efforts to unseat Duran as chairman.

    The annual fiesta parade will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at Second Street and Mills Avenue. From there, the parade will go west on Baca Avenue, south on Sixth Street, west on Douglas Avenue, north on 12th Street and west on Bridget Street. It will end on the Plaza.
