  • Torres, 45, narrowly misses Olympics

    OMAHA, Neb. — Dara Torres is headed back to Florida to watch the Olympics on TV, like a lot of middle-aged folks.

    The 45-year-old mom missed making a record sixth U.S. swim team by nine-hundredths of a second, finishing fourth in the 50-meter freestyle on the last night of the trials Monday.

    “This is really over,” she said, smiling. “That’s it; I’m going to enjoy some time with my daughter, have a nice summer and cheer on the U.S. team from afar.”

  • Fiesta run Sunday

    Runners and walkers who don’t want to save your last-minute huffing and puffing for Sunday, rest easy.

    There’s still time to sign up for the Las Vegas Fiesta Memorial Run after all.
    Late registration and early packet pick-up will be available from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Abe Montoya Recreation Center.

  • LCC players honored

    Luna Community College

    Luna Community College’s Ridge Hoopii-Haslam and Shannon Krause both received postseason awards recently.

    Hoopii-Haslam of the LCC baseball team was named to the National Junior College Athletics Association Baseball All-District/Region Team in Division II. Hoopi-Haslam hit close to .400 and had nine home runs.

  • Track clubs in regional meet

    The Las Vegas area will be well-represented this week in the U.S. Junior Olympics regional track and field competition under way in El Paso.

    A number of Pecos elementary and middle school students have qualified for the meet, which will feature young tracksters from a five-state region competing on the campus of the University of Texas-El Paso.

  • District 4 tourneys in Raton

    Local Little Leaguers are focused on the District 4 tournaments that kick off today (Friday) in Raton.

    That doesn’t mean local Little League officials aren’t still thinking about what might’ve been.

  • Local All-Stars lineups announced

    Six baseball teams and four softball teams from the Meadow City will represent the community in District 4 Little League All-Star tournaments beginning this weekend in Raton.

    The following are rosters provided to the Optic by the two local leagues.


    Baseball, 11-12: Robbie Alarcon, Joaquin Barela, Marcus Coca, Jeffery Sanchez, Isaiah Trujillo, Chris Padilla, Roman Sandoval, Brandon Graston, Marcus Lopez, Liam Lopez, Josh Sandoval, Antonio Bustamante, coaches Robert Alarcon, Marco Coca and Chris Padilla.

  • Indulging in pulled pork

    Pulled pork is a treat often reserved as an occasional indulgence. Which probably is good, since it tends to be made with some of the fattier pieces of pork, which then are smothered with a sugary sauce and piled on a white roll. Trouble is, we love pulled pork and we wanted a version we could feel good about enjoying a little more often.
