  • As It Is: Let’s not deny the truth

Recently, the Las Vegas Council passed a resolution condemning the new law in Arizona requiring police officers to check the immigration status of anyone they stop or detain whom they suspect is in the United States illegally.

Will this lead to racial profiling? Many believe it will; I’m with them.

  • Letter: No authority to write that way

It is very obvious you (editor Tom McDonald) have not sacrificed for our area, or our country either, and you are obviously not Hispanic. So, who are you to say “We say it’s time to move on.”  Who is “we,” pale face? What insult did you suffer?

Kilmer did not apologize to any of the parties he insulted. Most of our county commissioners are not even veterans — certainly not Les Montoya, Jesus Lopez or Nick Leger, either — all at our expense!

    Don’t pile on.

  • Minors Sox clinch title in LVLL finale

The streak. The championship. The glory of being the last team standing in Las Vegas Little League as the Fourth of July weekend 2010 got under way.

The LVLL minors division Red Sox claimed all of that on Friday evening at Keyes Park by beating the rival Cardinals 13-3 in the last Little League game to be played in town this summer.

Attention now turns to the district all-star tournaments, which begin Saturday in Raton. Local all-star teams have been practicing the last couple weeks around the city.

  • Leaders cut ribbon for veterans service center

While music blared from the annual fiesta from across the river, local leaders cut the ribbon on Saturday for a veterans service center on Douglas Avenue.

The center will be in the old armory, which was severely damaged in a fire in 1993 and has been sitting vacant ever since.

According to a press release, the state appropriated $650,000 for the project three years ago. The city has been the fiscal agent for the money.

  • Ever-popular Fiesta run is Sunday

Runners (and walkers, too) of all ages will grace the Meadow City on Sunday morning for the Las Vegas Fourth of July Fiesta Memorial Run. And it’s not too late to join in, either.

Entry fee is $30 adults, $10 children.

A 5-kilometer walk and 5K run will start at 7 a.m. at the San Miguel County Fairgrounds, and the 10K run will begin at the same time at United World College in Montezuma.

A 1-mile children’s run begins at 8:15 a.m. behind the Plaza Hotel. Parents and guardians may accompany their youngsters on the course.

  • Letter: Equality not in tax filings

For the past several years, I have been hearing about “equality” from domestic partnership activists, our governor, and even the director of the Internal Revenue Service. I am in favor of “equality,” especially when it comes to paying income taxes, however, with the legalization of same-sex marriages and domestic partnerships by several states and D.C., the failure of the Internal Revenue Code to recognize these relations has given them an unfair advantage over heterosexual couples.

  • Above and Beyond: It's fiesta time

April Esquibel saw herself as nerdy — and she wanted to change her self-image. So she started competing in pageants.

The 18-year-old now is Miss Santa Fe and held the titles of Miss Las Vegas 2009 and Hispanic Teen New Mexico 2006. She is this year’s Fiesta queen, with the event taking place this weekend.
