  • Vegas man charged in Tuesday shooting

    A 35-year-old Las Vegas man was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and other crimes for allegedly firing shots at another man on the 200 block of Commerce Street Tuesday night.

    Steven Quintana, of the 200 block of Commerce Street, was booked into the San Miguel County Detention Center. His bond was set at $25,000 cash.

    A probable cause statement filed in the case on Wednesday states that the victim, Antonio Almanzar, and Stella Baca arrived at about 10 p.m. at a house on Commerce Street belonging to Baca’s aunt.

The police and fire committee was instructed to inform Judge D. R. Murray not to remit the find of any offender brought before him, except in the case of minors.

  • High court upholds Obama health law

    WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld virtually all of President Barack Obama’s historic health care overhaul, including the hotly debated core requirement that nearly every American have health insurance.

    The 5-4 decision meant the huge overhaul, still taking effect, could proceed and pick up momentum over the next several years, affecting the way that countless Americans receive and pay for their personal medical care.

  • Thumbs - Our high country lowdown on the news - June 29, 2012

    THUMBS DOWN! WASTED WATER. Leaks happen, and when Las Vegas city officials find them they’re usually pretty good at notifying the appropriate people to get them fixed (we know, the Optic had a leaking swamp air unit the other day). We’re glad they take such waste seriously, especially when it comes to the larger leaks — like the old Medite line, which was found to be leaking 80 gallons a minute. Let’s hope it’s fixed soon.
