    Obamas headed to Carlsbad

    WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is taking the first family on a mini-vacation to Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico and Yosemite National Park in California during Father’s Day weekend.

    The White House notes the trip is taking place as the National Park Service nears its 100th birthday. The administration is using the trip to highlight Obama’s efforts to preserve land through the creation of new national monuments.

    WASHINGTON — Nearing the end of a lengthy primary fight, Democrats are coalescing around Hillary Clinton’s presidential bid and looking to reunite the party through a carefully orchestrated plan aimed at nudging rival Bernie Sanders to make his exit.

    The Sixth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution sets forth a list of rights that we are entitled to in the event that we are charged with committing a crime. The list includes such things as the right to a speedy trial, the right to an impartial jury, the right to confront accusers and the right to an attorney, important protections aimed at giving a criminal defendant a fighting chance in court.

  • Just a Thought: Living long enough to grow old

    Okay, I admit it, I am getting old. But I do find that the definition of “old” changes as the years roll by. An AARP magazine reported that age when a person is considered “old” gets higher the older the person is whom you ask. In other words, a 20-year-old defines “old” at a younger age than a 60-year-old does.

    The paintings are from the Dr. Robert Bell and Dr. Stirling Puck Fine Art Collection at Highlands.
