    Not all Las Vegas history has been consumed in political intrigue and power struggles, though politics has often dominated the story and evolution of the twin cities along the Gallinas. The other consistent thread which runs through Las Vegas history is that no other place in New Mexico has tried harder to attract industry and economic development — nor failed more woefully.

  • Baca excels in elite gridiron camp

    Mathew Baca of Las Vegas recently competed in the National Underclassmen Combine Ultimate 100 football skills competition in Los Angeles.  

    Baca will be a frosh this fall at Robertson High School.

  • RHS volleyball announces practices

    With the 2013-14 school year rapidly approaching, a number of local athletic programs have begun setting dates for their first official practices.

    Robertson High volleyball, led by head coach Judith Trujillo, announced its first sessions. The team will practice from 7 to 8 a.m. and from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 12, at Mike Marr Gym.

    The first day prep football teams are allowed to hold official practice is Monday, Aug. 5. For cross country, soccer and volleyball, the first day is the 12th.

  • North-South spikers do their thing

    Results from the 2013 North-South volleyball all-star matches held this past week in Albuquerque:

    • In Class 4A-5A, the North prevailed 26-24 and 25-20 for a 2-0 sweep.

    • In Class 2A-3A, the North rallied after a 25-18 opening set defeat, winning 25-19 and 25-16 for a 2-1 comeback triumph.

    • In Class 1A-1B, it was all South. The girls in blue took two, 25-16 and 25-17.

    Former West Las Vegas coach Brian Gurule was head coach for the 2A-3A North squad.

  • Isotopes shut out Sacramento

    SACRAMENTO — Matt Magill pitched six scoreless innings and three relievers completed the Albuquerque Isotopes’ second consecutive shutout, 2-0, over the Sacramento River Cats on Tuesday night at Raley Field.

    Magill (4-0) struck out seven, walked three and allowed three hits. Since coming off the disabled list, Magill has allowed two runs in 15 1/3 innings, while striking out 21.
